Also, I numbered the tables and I put the even numbers with the caucasian family so the Chinese family didn't have table # 4.
Great minds think alike
when DH and I were planning out our seating for the Swan Club, we wondered 'Why did the tables jump from 12 to 15?' 'Where's Table 13?'
We laughed b/c '13' in Chinese sounds similar to 'will give birth' or 'will grow', generally a good blessing for a new family. We took out Table 14 and asked they have a Table 13 instead.
Funny thing is, when we submitted our chart to the RH, they knew exactly what we were talking about, b/c they've worked with Chinese weddings before! They provide the table numbers, and even had a seperate '13' for couples that request it.

East quoted us $685 per table. That's more expensive than I had expected. We'll probably end up paying for it but I was just wondering if this is a decent price.
Not to scare anyone... but a friend of mine just pulled out of her banquet reservation at East Manor (on Kissena... the big RH in Flushing). She says that her FMIL freaked out because of confirmed Health Code Violations, and East Manor was shut down for a short time...
Eas Manor is now under new mgmt, and she can't get her deposit back . She will see if she can use it towards a credit on a future dinner party (not wedding-related).
Can anyone confirm this? She also reports that they are under a number of lawsuits form some angry brides & co.
Yup, there is a lawsuit going on for East manor in Elmhurst. I'm not sure about the one in flushing though. I think each East Manor has different partners involved so the health issues at one might not necessarily mean the other East Manors are run bad. I do think though that East in Flushing is a bit expensive and they rush you a lot...

Oh no! Is this true?!??!? We were planning to have our rehearsal dinner at East Manor on Main St. They have this private room on the 3rd floor that is the perfect size for our rehearsal dinner.I thought it was a bit odd they did not ask for a deposit for the reservation. I can't speak Chinese so I had Fiance handle it. I BELIEVE he made the reservation already. I was just gonna start pressuring him to confirm as the wedding is coming up so soon.
I guess I should wait.
I liked East bc I thought it was the cleanest!
Can you recommend any other Chinese restaurants in Flushing? I am thinking I should have a contingency plan.

hey jane~ TVB = learning chinesethe TVB studio actually moved somewhere new a few years ago. it's nice now!
yup, coco did my hair. she was really patient and spent a lot of time on it too. the male hanfu i bought online from this dude but i can say outright that that guy overcharges an arm and a leg. if you can read chinese, goto www.hanminzu.com and look for reputable hanfu sellers there. they're a lot cheaper!!!! or check out www.mandarintouch.com =)

I decided to go w/ Beauty One (Wedding Group One) for hair & makeup. 3 of my friends used them and they really like them. They're very pricey though. I have to agree though that finding a great makeup artist for Asian faces is very hard. It either comes out great or weird.

Re: ***~OFFICIAL Chinese Brides Thread!~*** updated w/ dancing lesson info
so i had my hair and makeup trial with a vendor on here and it went alright. the hair was fine, the makeup i was a little apprehensive about. i keep hearing all you asian brides saying how hard it is to get the asian eyes right...now i'm starting to believe it. i have another trial in two weeks, i'll see how that goes. check my album to see pics.

Re: ***~OFFICIAL Chinese Brides Thread!~*** updated w/ dancing lesson info
i also went to flushing to check out a couple of places for a chinese banquet/rehearsal dinner. i liked gala manor and ocean jewels. gala manor was a little cheaper, but we had dim sum there and the food was alright. i hear the food at ocean jewels is better, but their menu was more expensive and i wasn't crazy about their rooms. do you think i should check out east manor in kissina blvd? i also went to see tong yi fung and gum fung (which is under a different name now). has anyone else eaten at gala manor?

Gala Manor is nice. i was just there for dinner the other night. Do not chose gum fung. we had a wedding there and the food was not good. Ocean Jewel food is good but the look of it is very 'restaurant-y'...we did attend a wedding there but i thought Gala was nicer.

I've had dim sum at the gala manor before and it was okay. I think comparing dim sum food, Ocean Jewels is better.
You should also check out East Manor because their food is probably better. There's also another East Manor in Elmhurst and it's a lot bigger with private rooms upstairs.
There's also East Buffet that holds wedding as well.
There's another place called Linden Place located on Linden Plane. I've heard mixed reviews about their banquet style food.
Hope this helps!!!

Re: ***~OFFICIAL Chinese Brides Thread!~*** updated w/ dancing lesson info
I went to check out a few Chinese restaurants too in Flushing. Gala Manor's food was okay (we had dinner there to try the food and my FH was disappointed), the inside decor is nice though. East Manor on Kissena-food is good and they have private rooms. Ocean Jewels's food is really good but pricey. I'm not sure if they have private rooms. The old Gum Fung or Jade Asian now looks very nice. It's very new. I've had food at the old Gum Fung and it was good but I haven't been in the new one yet.

I think some people have Reiko's old e-mail address, but I found this one recently [email protected] and have gotten a response. And Reiko was also very helpful in suggesting other makeup artist's whose work she trusts!!
