Re: ***~OFFICIAL Chinese Brides Thread!~*** updated w/ cherry blossom/asian flower ideas
it may be enough if you have abit of background already and just want to have the teacher choreograph your moves and add a couple of moves into your routine.and if you guys are really good!
dh and i were quick learners but we wanted 10 lessons 'cus we're doing both dances and we never learned the waltz so it helped that kerensa was able to teach us that and polish our swing moves...
she taught us about 1.5 new moves per class so altogether we had about 12 moves we were able to do so our dance didn't look too repetitive...
hope that helps!

Thanks. It's so great to find another ballroom dancer here. Where do you usually go for dance? It's such a small world I wonder if we've met. I love ballroom dancing -- have been competing in latin for about 6 years now. I actually had a ballroom dj for the wedding -- Alfredo Melendez from Stepping out. He's great -- even got the non-dancers to dance with a 5 minute merengue lesson. I guess it was easier since most of my friends and my parent's friends also ballroom dance (my mom's a dance teacher). FH, however, is a terrible dancer, but I dragged him to class and forced him.
i'd love to learn to ballroom dance~ it sounds so cool!! fh had an ex who used to compete in latin too are there any competitions coming up in NY?

hmmm...that's a good question~ Might you have any friends that can work with a $250 budget?
My friends might be able to work something in that area... I know how expensive ballroom lessons can be. Many of them compete as a hobby, so they have amazing form and have a good foundation of technique, which is a plus. They also don't teach ballroom professionally full time, so I know that it's not they're lifeswork, so you might be able to get a good deal from them.
Only problem would be that they don't have a studio... maybe you can arrange a place to meet up?
FM me if you are still interested, I can make some calls.

Thanks! I have a feeling I've run into you before,... or at least we're seperated by a few degrees. I actually used to compete with the NYU Ballroom Dance team, so I know a few ppl in the ballroom world, especially a scattering of folks from other colleges (the SUNYs, Cornell, Colombia, RPI). If you've been competing and been to stepping out, you might know the prez of nyusabda, 'YC'. YC is actually a friend of mine and was at the wedding!
Yeah same here, DH not a big 'dancing fool', but was willing to learn some basics for the wedding. My friends were great with him and never made him feel stupid for not knowing steps.
re: competition, there's usually a big one at Columbia U. in Jan (I think it's the 2nd or 3rd weekend in Jan?). Alot of events in the tri-state area are listed here:

Melinda Mo did my makeup,... she's DH's cousin and works for Chanel. I posted her info somewhere on the forum, but FM me if you can't find it and want her info. I can send you a pic of my trial and some closeups from the wedding (on my work computer now :: !)

You mean a wedding gown or a traditional Chinese dress?

wedding gown
mmm i think the only place that will custom make your gown for you is to goto China to do it.... if you were to make your own dress, unless it's one of those relatively simple mermaid ones, it'd probably cost quite a lot.... like A line, ballgown types would probably cost alot b/c of the complexity of the layers and layers underneath....
and to get a good quality custom made one, your best bet would probably be to goto a costume designer....

There's a place in the Sheraton Hotel building in Flushing that can help you custom make dresses. My MOH got her prom dress custom made there. It came out perfect. Her prom dress was really fancy so in terms of intricate work of a wedding dress, it's comparable.

Do you know what the pricing is like there? Most of the dresses I'm looking at are in the $3-5k range so I hope it's comparable in price.
If it's not too much trouble, could you get me their contact information? I'd like to make an appointment.
