Can you recommend some decent chinese banquet style restaurants in queens for my rehearsal dinner???

I am going to have a full western wedding with no asian traditions so I'm going to try to have a chinese style rehearsal dinner.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We had our rehearsal dinner at East Buffet in Flushing. The food was wonderful! I think we averaged about $380 per table. That included 12 courses (including 2 desserts!). Non-alcoholic drinks were included as well. Our guests (Caucasian & Chinese) loved it!

ETA: Ok, I admit the service was only ok. The food was wonderful though. They did try to rush us, but my MIL is a strong pushy woman so she wouldn't let them rush us out. She told them off and said we are paying for this so BACK OFF! LOL

I Love your dress were did you get it, if you don't mind me asking.

Thank you. It's made by a friend of my mom who's a costume designer for stage. She copied the design mostly from Augusta Jone's design, which I tried on at Kleinfields. The original dress is beautiful in the front, but it has a very high back which made any movement of the arms very difficult, and the beading is a lot simpler. I feel bad about not getting the dress, but I really wanted to be able to do ballroom dance in it, and I just couldn't in the original. Augusta Jone's is a British designer who's not as well-known over here, but her stuff is beautiful and perfect for Asian, and quite reasonably priced for the quality. So check out her website if you're shopping. The original's below.

Hi it's worth your time to look at Willi Wong's wed site. I booked him because it seems to me that every wedding that he does has a different story, there story not someone else’s. [email protected]

Willi Wong takes beautiful pictures!! I looked at him when I was trying to chose a photographer. I was very impressed by his work but he was a little out of my price range. Amazing pictures though!

All of you girls keep referring to price by table. How many guests go in each table?

I LOVE East for dimsum.

Do they actually have space for you to rehearse?

I am only inviting my bridal party and my international family members to my rehearsal dinner. We will have 20-30 people at our rehearsal dinner.

It's typically 10 per table, although you can probably fit 12 if the ppl are tiny or there are kids. But ten is waht you typically pay for.

so 38 bucks per head if 10 per table. That's hard to believe though! I typically hear of 50 per head at the 10 seat tables...

My bro had his wedding at East Manor as well...

My last name is Wong now too. You should see some of the looks I receive when they see a blonde haired, blue eyed girl with a Chinese last name.

Haha! you could have gotten Willie to lower his prices. Say you're related by blood! :D Fat chance 'cus Wong is a very popular last name (like Chen or Li) but you never know!

Oh and I know what you mean about the name! My last name is going to be English (DH is German/English) and I am chinese! Imagine the look on people's faces! You dont look English! :P

Is East Manor the same thing as East?

Sorry, I am a little clueless. The East I am thinking of is the more modern cleaner looking restaurant. There are two locations: Main St and Kissena.

Which location is better for a rehearsal dinner location?

Fiance's family is from out of state so I think they would enjoy a NYC style chinese banquet. My Korean guests will definitely like it too. Most of my Manhattan friends have never even been to Flushing so I think overall it could be a good choice.

It's pretty sad. My Fiance is such a twinkie that he doesn't know anything about these chinese banquets. I even know more than him!

12 courses?!?!?

How can a person possibly eat 12 courses!??!?!

Can you pay less and have maybe 5 courses instead???

I know I will be the one to negotiate prices bc FH hates haggling.

Actually 12 courses not alot because they will be shared by all your guest (10 - 12 people). I went to both Sharton/ East Manor, honestly I don't like food there. It's average, not the best. If you are in Flushing, I love 'East Lake' - Chinese translation. they are very popular and you need to wait for a long time.

The place we went to was called 'East' and it was on Main Street in Flushing. We were on the second floor, they have great dim sum on the weekends.

My MIL negotiated the prices for the RD and I signed the contract, so I know she wasn't fibbing about the price. She 'knows' a lot of people in Chinatown, so maybe that is how she got such a good price. Everyone was very stuffed and full after the dinner, there was plenty of food. We had 2 tables of 10 and 1 table of 12. So overall it was a great deal.

We booked about 2 or 3 months before the wedding. Everything was setup and waiting when I arrived. My MIL was actually there before me, so maybe she was pushing them around, which wouldn't surprise me. The food was great, but service is sometimes questionable at thise kinds of places.

My MIL wanted menus on the tables to let the caucasian guests know what the different kinds of food were and they wrote it on a piece of paper and photocopied it! My MIL thought this was great, I couldn't believe how sloppy it looked. I would have printed menus on my PC if I had known she wanted it!

Bridex100, have you thought about a korean dinner instead?

Because I believe the service at a korean restuaurant is usually better.

There's a couple of nice ones in Flushing and they have separate rooms so you don't have to share the restaurant like you do at the chinese ones....

The one on northern boulevard, Kum Gang San host weddings and they have a separate room. You can do an outdoor wedding at Queens Botanical then head over to KGS for the reception. I think it's nice there and I also love the food.

It's funny. The Chinese restaurants I love, the Chinese typically think is not very good. At the same time, as a Korean, I hate Kum Gang San's food.

I was open to having a Korean rehearsal dinner but I thought it would be nicer to have chinese banquet style since my Korean guests (adults) probably have never had a chinese banquet style dinner. Plus, FH isn't from NY so I think they'd like to experience it here.

I don't think Korean bbq is that special with any significant meaning. I could be biased bc I have korean food somewhat often.

In hindsight, I think it would have been amazing to have a NY Garden outdoor ceremony followed by a nice Chinese reception. It would have been so much cheaper as well!!!

Did/are any of you ladies using a Chinese bakery for your wedding cake? Which bakeries do wedding cakes?

I visited Taipan Bakery. Their price quote was very reasonable but the pictures weren't that great. However, I love that bakery and am very satisfied with the taste of their pastries.

Just wondering what your thoughts were.

Re: ***~OFFICIAL Chinese Brides Thread!~*** updated w/ centerpiece ideas

One thing I regretted that I didn't really look into is finding an elegant space and having a medley of food catered - chinese, american and italian.

Since DH is English and I'm chinese I think it would have been nice to combine it so it doesn't appear like I favor one family over the other. We ended up going the easy route 'cus Westbury Manor provides everything, right down to the bridal attendant and program baskets. :D

I think we are monopolizing this board! Did you guys see the new Official African American thread?! :D

Anyway, on to the bakery, Tai pan is good but I would make sure they don't used canned fruit fillings in the cake. I had their cakes before and didn't like the canned stuff.

One asian bakery I absolutely love is the one at Cafe Zaiya at 41st St in NYC. They make the best pastry in my opinion. Their strawberry cake is heavenly!!!

And they can make a 40 person cake for 60 or 80 bucks. I think you can get them to make a tiered one for under 200 or 300. Which is considerably cheaper than the american bakeries.

It's also not too sweet and taste amazing!!! :D
