Erica...they look like to me, either stickers or cutouts. Cutouts are these embellishments that are printed on a page, usually glossy paper, by a company then cute out. They are really cute

Teh flowers dont look like punch art to me.

If you go back to the page where you found the layout, usually they will tell you what they used to make the page!! Let me know who posted it so I can read the description!!

here is an example of what they have...

the designs are printed on glossy paper then you cut them out, and past them on yor pages!!

you should bring your tools and enougth paper to make your layouts.

Some woman actually plan thier pagesbefore they go, and out all the stuff that they are going to lut on that page in seperate envlopes!! LOL...I do not get that organized!!

you can buy them online but if you really want to see the true colors I would go to Michaels or a scrapbook store to see them. Sometimes the colors on the screen is way different than in real person!! I have had that happen to me!!

Journaling Tips

JOURNALING TIP #1: There is NO absolute Right Answer.

Yes, I do mean that what works for one of us might not be what works for others of us, but I mean more than 'Different strokes for different folks' as Sly and the Family Stone used to sing.

Any given journaling approach or tip or answer isn't always going to be what you need for every LO or every album. You need to give yourself the flexibility not to get locked in to a single approach.

JOURNALING TIP #2: The Dreaded POV Problem

When I was a newbie scrapbooker, I really struggled with the problem of point of view (POV). Should I write in third person ('Deb, Steve, Jonah, and Abby went to the zoo') or first person ('Steve, Jonah, Abby, and I went to the zoo')? I was absolutely paralyzed about journaling until I had The Answer to this question.

What did the experts say? Well, some people asserted that it's vitally important for the sake of clarity and history to label everyone by name on your SB pages. That way your great- great- great- granddaughter will know who everyone is. Furthermore, they insisted that you needed to do it on EVERY page b/c of the possibility that the pages would become separated from the SB and your poor great- great- great- would have just this one page and no clue who these people were. And so, also, you needed to get LAST names onto the pages too.

I see the point of all of that. I decided that I didn't care about those things as much as I cared about other things. One reason for that is that I don't scrapbook for posterity; I scrapbook for myself (remember, we had a poll about that a few months ago). When I SB'ed strap-hinge, I really didn't worry about the pages getting separated; I might have to re-evaluate that if I decide to stick with top-loading.

So, since I scrapbook primarily for myself, I decided to write in the way that was most comfortable for me and in the way that seemed most consistent with that -- first-person. (I think that 3rd person can feel 'stilted' too many of us when we try to write in it.) And that is what I do -- most of the time. So, my journaling is full of 'I' and 'we' when I describe events. As my small nod to posterity, when I finish an album, I always record on the inside cover the date that the album was completed and I identify myself by name as the creator of the album.

There are circumstances where I journal from another POV -- gift albums, for instance, or individual LOs where a different 'voice' just seems to be called for. And I don't worry about the inconsistency ('A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds' -- Thoreau??? or was it Emerson???)

So, I'd encourage those of you who are struggling with POV to think about (1) who you are SBing for and (2) what voice are you most comfortable writing in. If your journaling feels false or stilted to you, you won't like it and you won't do it. And, truly, journaling is a vitally important part of SBing.




Journaling Tip #2 (continued): That Pesky POV Problem

The special case of 2nd person journaling -- You may have noticed that previously I talked about 1st person journaling and 3rd person journaling -- which was the question that most of you who struggle with POV struggle with. But what about 2nd person journaling? Those of you who do separate albums for each of your DKs may use 2nd person journaling; 'You were so cute in your little hat. And you were so curious about what was under that rock.' I really struggle with writing in 2nd person; it just is awkward for me personally. This is one of the reasons, I think, why I struggle with DD's lifebook (she's adopted) -- b/c the 'lifebook' is supposed to center on her and her feelings and her experiences, NOT MINE. If you do keep a kid's album and you do use 2nd person journaling, you may want to give some thought to other readers (that great-great-great-granddaughter who someday will have the album) and how those future readers will know who 'you' was. The inscription in the front of the album would be my solution ('This album was made for and about Thomas Jefferson Jones by his mother, Martha Washington Jones, date.').

How to refer to people in your journaling -- This is another dilemma that several people mentioned and it really does seem to me to be related to the POV question. So, let's say that DH, DS, DD, and I go to the zoo. I might write in 3rd person and call each person by name. I might write in second person and write 'Daddy and Mommy took you and your sister to the zoo.' I might write in 1st person and say, 'Daddy and I took Jonah and Abby to the zoo' OR 'Steve and I took Jonah and Abby to the zoo' OR 'We took the kids to the zoo' OR some other variation of the above. Now, when I write that 'Daddy and I' took the kids to the zoo, are you confused? Do you wonder whose Daddy it is? That's the pesky question of what to call people. He's not my daddy and I'm writing in first person so what do I call him? And my mother == what do I call HER?

This is where I personally fall back on Journaling Tip #1. Remember? There is no one absolute Right Answer. I personally do not consistently refer to people in one way. I look at it this way: I don't consistently refer to people in one way IRL, so I don't need to feel compelled to do so in by SBs. I'm one of those horrible people who sometimes refers to my husband as 'Daddy' ('Daddy, will you help Abby with that cup before she drops it?' 'Jonah, could you ask Daddy to help you with that?') and likewise my mother gets called 'Nana' now by her kids as well as by her grandkids. We manage not to get terribly confused IRL, so I hope that IN CONTEXT it's not terribly confusing in my SBs.

Now, I do take pity on the casual browser and on that great-great-great-, whom I don't often worry about (b/c I SB for me, remember? Your mileage may vary.). And here's what I do. When I introduce a character who does not appear regularly in my SBs, I give more information the first time. ('The family reunion was held at Grandma Marilyn's (Steve's mother's) house' or 'Grandma Marilyn (last name), Steve's mother, . . .'). That way, the information is there.

In short, if the LO concerns the kids, I typically refer to people the way we refer to them around the kids. If it's a LO about DH and me (like our trip to Las Vegas), I DO NOT call him 'Daddy,' Grown-up LOs get grown-up names.

That's what works for me.

BIG JOURNALING SECRET - Your journaling approach doesn't need to be the same on every LO.

Journaling Tip #4 -- The 5 Ws can be a good way to journal. But not always.

For my first several years of scrapping, I scrapped strictly CM (Creative Memories). This was, of course, in the Dark Ages of scrapbooking when there weren't LSSes everywhere and so many fun products, etc.

Well, the point is that CM preaches that 'every picture deserves at least the 5 Ws -- Who, What, When, Where, Why.' And for a long time I tried to get the 5 Ws onto every LO, even if I didn't get it with every picture.

And it's a good reminder of basic information that ought to be included in LOs. And, so if you don't know what to write, you might try starting with the 5 Ws.

BUT guess what? Every LO doesn't really need the 5 Ws. Sometimes, the 5 Ws would take away from your LO. B/c it's not a LO about Who, What, When Where, Why and those facts are just distracting.

I have a LO I did this month title 'After the Deluge.' It's a LO of photos I took of an incredible double rainbow in the sky across the street from our house. Here's the journaling I have on the page: the title, the date, a quotation about rainbows. I felt the LO didn't need anymore. After all, it's OBVIOUS WHAT the pictures are of. Did I really need to write 'This is a picture of a rainbow'?

Which brings me to



'I don't know what to write.' That seems to be a common problem among scrappers who have a problem with journaling. It's easy to see how that could be a significant barrier to journaling. So, here are some tips about knowing what to write.

Journaling Tip #3 -- Write What You'd Say About the Page If You Were Sitting With Them Looking at Your Scrapbook Together

I believe that my scrapbooks should 'stand alone' -- that is, that someone ought to be able to pick one of them up and look through it and get the stories that I'm trying to tell. I figure that if I have to sit there with them and explain the pages and the pictures after I've journaled, then I haven't done a good job of journaling.

For instance, I have an entire album of our trip to China to bring home DD. I recently sent the album --hand-carried by DH -- to my cousin Jen -- tj*s_bride. Everything I want to share about that amazing trip is recorded in that scrapbook. I could send it with DH and she could look through it and I didn't need to be there to narrate.

So, pretend that you're talking to someone about the LO and write down what you'd say. Have someone else write down what you're saying or tape record yourself saying it. Then, use what you've just said as the journaling on your page.

Even though I'm not big on re-doing my pages -- I mean, really, really, REALLY not big on it -- I'm not above adding journaling if I find that I constantly need to supplement what I've already written. If your page is already full, you might have to add hidden, pull out journaling to fit it in.

But, think about that great-great-great-granddaughter --- you won't be around to tell her about your scrapbooks. OR think about your version of my cousin Jen -- someone you want to share your SBs and your stories with. OR your kids and how they'll be able to pick up your SBs and read what the LOs are all about. OR what do YOU want to remember later about these pictures? What would you say to any of these people? (Which of them are you SBing for?) Then SAY THAT!


Journaling Tip #5: You don't always have to write a lot for your journaling to be effective.

It's true that most of us probably don't write enough, but if you've got journaling block, it might help to remind yourself that journaling doesn't mean writing a big long thing. Maybe you just need the date and a quote -- like me!!

Journaling Tip #6: Sometimes the photos and LO speak for themselves.

Now, I'm a HUGE fan of journaling, but sometimes your photos and LO really do speak for themselves. Let's say you've got some really cute pictures of one of your kids -- say my DD Abby playing on the swing. Now, how many pictures do I have already of Abby on the swing? Lots. And how many of those have I scrapped? Lots. But these pictures are just SO CUTE and I have a really cute idea for a LO for them. And, while we're making assumptions, let's assume that there was really nothing special about the day or my feelings or anything else. I just took pictures 'cause that's what I do and they came out cute! Well, this just might be a LO that speaks for itself. What am I going to journal? 'Here's Abby playing on the swing'? 'Abby had fun on the swing'? These things are OBVIOUS from the LO and the photos. A title that captures the mood and maybe a date are all it really needs, maybe. (Remember, I'm not worrying about the page coming out of the album and my great-great-great-granddaughter wondering who this little girl is b/c it's the only surviving photo of my DD. As if, given the number of photos I've taken and scrapped.)

There is another, completely different approach to journaling a LO like the one I'm talking about, and I'll talk about that sometime in the near future. But, sometimes, your strong photos can say it all.

Has anyone used scrapbooking software/ I bought one at Costco last week- Scrapbook Factory Deluxe---How many of you use the computer for scrapbooking-- I havent yet but am going to start playing around--especially for lettering-- I hate my handwriting in my book-- I know journaling is part of it but there is hardly any in mine because of the handwriting issue--I am even thinking of redoing some pages because of this
Can't wait to raid some stores this weekend in search of card materials!!!!
