Anyone buy a house yet?

Are you all buying a house or a condo before you get married or what is your living situation? Also is everyone staying in the same county that they grew up in or are you moving?

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?

We bought our condo about 5 mos. before the wedding. DH moved in, I waited until after the wedding. We stayed in Suffolk, where he grew up, and where we both lived before getting married.

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?

I was born and raised upstate until about maybe 6 years ago I moved to Franklin Square, LI. FH born and raised in Nassau County all his life.
We would love to buy a house, but cannot afford one, so we'll live together until we can come up with enough money for a down payment...or grow old and die...which ever comes first!
We'd love to stay in FS, but houses run from $450-$850...for NOTHING!!! So...who knows...

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?

FH & I rent an apartment in Bellmore b/c we are paying for most of the wedding ourselves & I have been in school for the past three years. We both lived in Nassau & I will be moving into the apartment and the end of the month. After the wedding we are going to start looking for a house--we don't want to be in our apartment forever.

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?

Fh and I bought a condo in March. I live in Suffolk so I'll be moving to NJ come Aug. (after the wedding). Once we get the rest of our furniture he will be moving into our condo. Currently he and I are each living with our parents.

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?

We are renting a basement apt in East Meadow right now. We are waiting to buy for a few reasons right now (waiting to see where FI will find a job, hoping that the market will begin to cool down). We will hopefully buy SOMETIME in the near future though.

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?

I need to know...please give us tips...any advise!!!
How can you all be buying houses? Between the two of us we make an Ok salary. BUT there is NO money in site for a down payment on a house for us any time soon with paying for this entire wedding ourselves. We're fine with that, but would love to stop renting and pay a mortgage. Any tips? Websites? Grants? .....

My fiance and I NEVER EVER thought we could afford a house even though I am a teacher (for 6 years!!!) and he works for a major media conglomerate - so we too are just doing 'okay'.

Three weeks ago, his mom was selling her house and was having a hard time. I said 'well, we'd be finding a starter home anyway when we can afford one, I feel like we should just buy hers'. The next day, much to my TOTAL surprise - we were pre-approved!! We are closing next month!!!

Don't think you can't do it. Talk to the bank and you may be surprised like me! So before you get discouraged, see if you can get pre-approved first!!

Good Luck!!

I know I REALLY tried to convince FI to move, but he's taking the New York Bar in a few months and once he's certified here theres no way hes going to want to leave....Looks like I'll be stuck in the shacks of LI :)

PS I love Debbie Downer , she cracks me up

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?

We both live with our parents, but we bought a home this past august. we are trying to do some renovations before we get married. We wouldn't be able to live there during renovations due to my severe allergies and asthma. We were both raised in Nassau County and bought our home in Nassau, just not in the same towns. It took us about six months before we found it. It takes a lot of time and patients to go house hunting.

My suggestion is to start looking as soon as possible, you never know, you may find something that is perfect for you and FI. I highly suggest using the website:
www.mlsli.com

Have fun house hunting!

What if you're not buying frivolous things... Just food, rent, loans, etc.?

Re: Anyone buy a house yet?

FI was born and raised in Queens b4 he moved out here and met the love of his life (ME!). We recently moved into an apartment together in Suffolk, 10 mins from where I've always lived. We'd love to stay on LI but due to the high cost of living out here it may not happen. Altho his daughter is still in Queens and seeing as she's only 8 I know we're not gonna go too far.

Exactly my point... I don't spend money on frivolous things and if I didn't buy a shirt of pair of shoes, that money won't be enough to save around $60- $60K just for the downpayment.

I hope I didn't offend anyone... I was just kidding around with the shack thing.
