Paris Live Music
 Interviewed Sep 24, 2008
“Paris is a 9-piece band together since 1992 but definitely not your parent’s wedding band. Job #1 for Paris is to make a truly unforgettable experience for the couples that choose us for their wedding and to have fun doing it. “
Q. When most people think of wedding music, they think of DJs, tell us how you offer a unique and special alternative to the traditional?
A. You know we’ve had a generation pass when we start thinking of DJ’s as traditional. I really believe that there is no substitution for the sound of live voices and instruments. That’s something that no DJ can duplicate. They themselves (DJ’s) know this because, how many DJ’s companies now offer live musicians? This is funny to us because by the time you add everything together, you’re better off hiring a well-rehearsed band that’s not playing along with the recording (like what live musicians with DJ’s are doing). What’s old is new as far a live music goes.
Q. In your opinion, is a band best suited for the cocktail hour or reception or both?
A. To us, it’s a matter of using live music differently for both cocktail hour and reception. As it is with many of our affairs, we’ll offer a choice for the cocktail hour between a piano player, piano/sax player combo, a jazz trio, string quartet, Caribbean steel drum band or harpist and then have Paris for the reception. This is a nice musical contrast between the two parts of the wedding and entertaining for guests.
Q. Tell us about working in conjunction with other types of entertainment such as a DJ.
A. I know other bands work with DJ’s a lot more than we do. That’s because couples will sometimes combine the two to satisfy their parents. The parents want a band and the couple wants to hear current music. We work with DJ’s less than 10% of the time. That’s because we can play all the up-to-date Top 40 songs that couples demand. No one has to add a DJ with us to be able to hear what they want.
Q. What types of entertainment music do you offer?
A. Any successful wedding band must be able the play a variety of music to accommodate the musical tastes of their clients. Paris fits the bill in every way and then some. In addition to R&B, Rock, Disco, Freestyle, Country, Oldies, Reggae and Big Band/Swing, Paris will perform Top 40 dance music with amazing authenticity. In fact, no other band can come close to the Top 40 repertoire of Paris. Equally important, is our ability to accurately perform Italian, Greek and Spanish music with the capability of emceeing in those languages as well. This fills a need where multiple ethnic considerations are in play. Such as when you have a couple that has to have Italian & Greek music played at their wedding to satisfy both sides of the family. Think about how many headaches this ability could avoid.
Q. Tell us about how you motivate the crowd and keep the party going?
A. We have three lead singers that are experts at motivating a crowd of people. We strike a blend of encouraging a party atmosphere and not over doing it and becoming obnoxious. Motivating people to be part of the wedding and have fun is as important as the music we play.
Q. Can couples customize their song list or do you have a repertoire they need to select from?
A. We have an extensive list of songs that couples can choose from. They can select the songs they want to hear from our list and eliminate the ones they don’t want. If a song is not on our list, we will learn it for their wedding and not from the sheet music. We will take the original recording and rehearse the song from that. This way, their favorite song will sound as close to the original as possible.
Q. Tell us what you can add to the wedding celebration.
A. Very simply, Paris is all about energy, versatility, experience, talent, professionalism and attention to detail.
Q. Give us some insight on what a couple should look for when choosing a band.
A. The one thing a couple should never do is hire a band from a DVD or audio recording only. ALWAYS see the band live before making a decision. The live performance must match or come close to what is on the bands media. It may be a very different representation. Also, never pay the balance in full before the wedding. This may prevent any changing of band members at the last minute. Paris lists the names of its members on our contact. We guarantee that the band you hire is the band you get on your wedding day.
Q. How far in advance should a couple schedule a meeting with you?
A. We should be the third thing on your wedding priority list behind booking the catering hall and church or temple. This is because you want to make sure no one else books Paris for your date before you do. Many times, couples will check our availability before they settle on a firm wedding date.
Q. How far in advance should a couple book with you?
A. Booking Paris as soon as possible will guarantee you getting us for your wedding. We require only a small deposit to secure the date and settle the balance on the day of the wedding thus making it easier on your finances.
Q. What do you require for setup and is there anything they should inform the catering hall of?
A. We have experience playing in all the major catering facilities throughout the Tri-state area. If it’s a place we’ve never played before, we’ll always call before the affair to check the requirements and conditions. Regardless, this is one area that the couple does not have to concern themselves with. We’ll take care of working with the catering hall directly allowing them one less thing to worry about.
Q. Is this something younger as well as more mature couples can take advantage of, benefit from and have fun with?
A. Part of being an experienced wedding band involves reading a crowd of people and their music likes. Calling the right song at the right time is an important component to the outcome of a successful party. This is especially true if there is a wide age range. We take pride in the fact that people of all ages tell us how much they’ve enjoyed themselves at the weddings we play at.
Q. What are some of the most requested songs you can boast you do?
A. We would say much of the WKTU play list, the more popular classic disco, some Freestyle, Stevie Wonder / Marvin Gaye R&B, popular Italian artists; Eros Ramazzotti & Andrea Bocelli and ballads by Celine Dion & Josh Groban.
Q. What, in your opinion is the developing trend in bands and wedding celebrations?
A. Two areas come to mind. First, couples do not want anything that says “old school wedding band”. They want nothing that may remind them of what their parents wedding was like. In fact, when people ask us if we’re a wedding band, we say, “we’re not a wedding band, we’re a band that plays weddings!” Secondly, over the last few years, weddings have started to involve more production in addition to the music. We’re getting more requests to add light shows (for a club environment) and large flat screen video displays (to show montages, still pictures and live action from the dance floor). We are also starting to incorporate LCD “up lighting”. This involves using a certain number of color changing light panels placed around the room on the floor that illuminate the walls. It continually changes the look of the room for a dramatic effect. It’s pretty cool!
Q. Are bands appropriate for both daytime and evening events?
A. Absolutely! Live music works for weddings no matter if it’s afternoon or evening, and anytime of year for that matter. Paris will make it a memorable wedding no matter what.
Q. Besides the popular music most of us are familiar with, what other types of songs or music do you do?
A. Be cause of the versatility and talent of the band, we can pretty much perform anything we want to. If someone asks for a song and we can’t do a credible job, we’ll be honest and say so. Luckily, we haven’t had to do that very often.
Q. Can you also play requests?
A. We can, however we only take requests from the bride or groom and their immediate families. This is done to maintain our clients control of the music we play at their wedding.
Q. Do you do any ethnic songs such as Italian, Irish, or Greek tunes to name a few?
A. If you’re a band performing at weddings in the melting pots of New York and New Jersey, you better be able to play all kinds of ethnic music. Paris is well versed in Italian, Irish, Greek, Jewish and Spanish music. Over the years we’ve even performed Turkish, Armenian, Lebanese and Romanian music as well.
Q. What can hiring a band add to the wedding celebration?
A. We’ve been noticing lately the look of delight on the faces of wedding guests when they enter the reception room and see that’s it a live band instead of a DJ. They are even more impressed as they sit and listen to the few songs we play before the bridal party to be introduced. Their actions seem to say, “Wow, an excellent band, we’re going to have a great time tonight.”
Q. Tell us about some of the latest innovations and how you are keeping up with the market trends.
A. The trends are occurring mostly on the Top 40 side of the music. We keep track of things much like what the DJ’s are doing. Keeping an ear to what’s going on there is really important considering that it’s central to what we do best. I guess you could say, “Paris is a band that thinks like a DJ”. Also, we use state-of-the-art sound equipment that is essential to reproducing the sounds of today.
Q. What kind of sound is your particular band most noted for? (jazz, swing, big band, etc).
A. Paris is known for sounding as close to the original recording as possible. It is our core philosophy. Basically, couples that hire Paris for their weddings want Hi-energy Top 40 dance music with the ability to perform other types of music around that. We are very proud of the fact that more than 35% of our clients originally wanted a DJ and chose to hire us instead.
