I ASKED and yes i was answered but in that answer i was told how horrible cows are treated for their milk right?

So don't you think the same animals are treated horribly for their skin?

This thread was started because some people could not understand how a veggie of vegan would not eat meat due to animal cruelty but yet wear their skin!

Again this thread was started to ask the question: TO vegans and veggies...do you wear leather goods

If the answer is i am not perfect SO BE IT..
but you can't help others who listen to the detailed explanations as to why one is a veggie/vegan and hear them say they wear leather/skins of animal goods, and think that is hypocritical and goes against everything you just explained as to why you don't eat meat

Then I think it's a perfectly acceptable answer from those that eat meat and wear leather.

I have no problem with people that eat meat simply because they want to or they like the taste. Everyone is different, everyone is free to do what they want to do, and not everyone needs a 'reason' for what they do. But if someone directly asks me why I don't eat meat then I tell them, but I don't just bring it up or preach to people.

man oh man, if one would try to avoid every animal product, one would go insane! you couldn't take pictures or develop film, use nail polish, drive a car, put your head on a pillow, the list goes on...the point is, those who are vegetarians are only trying to minimize the suffering. i don't think it is impossible to obliterate it entirely. if i have a pair of leather shoes, chances are i am wearing them for 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, for a year or more, versus a hamburger that lasts 5 minutes. the point for me is that i am a vegetarian, i wear leather shoes, i take pictures, i have a down jacket, i love nailpolish and it has to come off eventually, but i am doing my part, small as it may be, but compound it by the millions of people who do it as well, and a dent is made. my goodness, everything is connected. if you try to avoid buying a product that is not american made, well, good luck. the same with products that are not made from animal byproducts, good luck. it is like monopolies that are everywhere. by being a vegetarian, well, i personally don't think i'm negating my beliefs by wearing leather shoes, and if that is the one thing someone can find wrong with me, so be it.

This is just a question? especially sincei am not an expert by any means

But isn't the animal cruelty in this world more in the catching ans skinning of the animals for their skin/fur a lot worse than the same that is done for them being used for food?


In all honesty i think that it is commendable that you take steps to reducing the cruelty to animals and i think the best answer yet has been that.

call me ignorant, and ignorance can be bliss (sometimes), but i'd like to think that they are killed for food and then used for clothing. i'm sure it isn't like that, but i'd like to think that there is as little waste as possible by these big businesses.

Not everyone is a vegetarian for the same moral reasons. I became a vegetarian for many different reasons. I don't want to intake the hormones that are pumped into cattle and chickens. I Felt guilty for eating another living being. I think that if people had to go out and kill their meals their respect for the animal might just be a little greater. The Native Americans hunted. They ate meat and used every part of the animal. It was killed and then thanked for it giving its life to help sustain their own life. It was respected and often revered. If this was the way it were today then I would have no issue with meat, but today animals are killed needlessly.


FYI: Vegetarians who wear leather can do research and find out if that animal was killed for only its skin or if that animal was used for meat and then the skin used for clothing etc. You are trying to make a very complex multi-layer issue black and white and it can not be done.

my friend beth became a vegan and had a huge garage sale and sold all her leather and suede clothes and shoes and gave the proceeds to animals rights. she only wears animal friendly shoes coats etc and wont put anything with eyes in her mouth. i applaud her because she decided she wanted to stand by her beliefs and does it 100 percent not just half way

why are you trying to gross me out?? you have your belifs and i have no reason to go aganist what you say, but don't push what you belief on me. i am not a vegetraian or vegan, i eat deef, drink milk and take medications that may or may not have been created by testing on animals. you are entitled to your opinion, but don't telll me how i should live my life....

I was answering the question 'For you vegans ... why no dairy?' -- not trying to push anything on anyone. You have your beliefs and I have mine, like you said. I never push my beliefs on anyone, but if the question is asked, I repond. Did I once say, 'You have to live your life this way?' NO! I was saying I'm happy if people just do a little. I have no idea why people feel the need to ridicule vegetarians all the time. I guess it's some sort of defense mechanism bc they feel guilty or something. Anyway, all I'm saying is I wish there were more vegetarians out there and I love everyone who helps animals ... even if it's just a little. And as far as all of you that say you'd be pissed if you went to a vegetarian wedding, you should reassess what a wedding really is and get over the fact that weddings AREN'T about going to a party -- they're about celebrating in the love and happiness of the bride and groom that you supposedly love.

you know, i am getting really bothered with these types of comments. i would not be happy at a vegetarian wedding and thats my perogative. yes i would be happy for the couple, be gracious with my gift regardless and dance my *** off. but yes, i would be unhappy, but i would still have a good time. so why dont you get off your soapbox now and stop judging me and others who have said the same. an opinion was asked for and given in a previous thread. enough of this 'holier than thou' attitude just b/c i gave an honest opinion like many others. i am so done with this thread! peace out!

That is a totally unfair statement... matron is NOT on a soapbox... all she, and the rest of us were doing, was responding to some seriously aggresive and antagonistic questions asking us, out of the blue, to defend our eating lifestyle... most vegetarians will not go on a rampage trying to force every tom, **** and harry to change to become a vegetarian... but yes, if you ASK, and open the door, particularly with antagonistic questions, then we will answer... and, I'm sorry, but I agree with matron... to be unhappy about one little meal out of thousands in your lifetime, when the point is NOT the meal, but the celebration of two people you love, makes no sense to me...

Well, lets see, if you were a Budist, you wouldn't eat any vegetables because those are living things as well. Pasta contains whey and that is an animal product...

I haven't eaten meat all my life AND i don't like veggies either...oh no fish too! that is just who i am. I just started eating burgers again (albeit..charred black).
Nobody said that they are would be MAD if they had to go to a veggie wedding...BUT it would be disappointing...and that is a honest opinion!
Oh i am 31 ...no clogged arteries!

Actually this thread is about they hyporcrisy of vegitarians and vegans wearing leather/skins of animal...Nobody wanted anyone to defend their eating habits per say..

And this thread had nothing to do with weddings what-so-ever! Go back to the previous thread that marymoon started if you want to further discuss that issue

Well, actually, Oct2004, I realize this thread was not about weddings, and there was a previous thread, but if you read what I was responding to, that person brought it up again here...

And although this thread started as a question about veggies who also wear leather, it expanded into much more than that... asking veggies why they avoid milk products and more... which, in my book, requires a response explaining our lifestyle...
