Re: DJ for a Black Tie Wedding?
Just make sure you can get an upscale DJ. I went to a wedding once where the MC started grinding with some people on the dance floor. Not exactly black tie material!

Wow, some of this is out of control.....
Anyway, honestly, if I saw 'Black tie' on an invitation, the only thing I would really be thinking about is what I would wear. If I am in the mood to dance, it doesn't matter if it is a band or a DJ. Do what you want Marymoon, it's your day.![]()
i have to agree...
when i get a 'black tie' or 'black tie optional' invitation... all i think about is what i would wear.. heheheehehehehehe

People in my fmily are used to black tie affairs, just abut every other affair is black tie or black tie optional, so I won't be springing anything. I really want the evening to be elegant, I know when I go to a black tie affair I don't wear a cocktail dress, I wear a ballgown. i really want it to be formal. I just don't know if I NEED a band.
I know once I went to a black tie wedding and they had a band, but they really skimped on everything else, and een the immediate family wasn't in black tie and THEN I was pissed, but I didn't even think of band vs. Dj. Instead of a band, we're having unlimited fresh seafood, a pasta course, a viennese hour, etc etc...so that may be good, but I don't know if band vs DJ makes or breaks a black tie affair
I was going to say it really depends on your family, I think. I come from a huge Italian family that loves to dress up for weddings. I didn't put black tie but a lot of them came in tuxes anyway - I guess it goes back to the days where that's what people wore to events...
Anyway, I think a DJ can be totally classy - classier even than a band at times. Usually a band has a lot of members, takes up quite a bit of room. a DJ can be unimposing and elegant. I second Michael. His set-up was really understated - and he was a great, classy MC. FM if you have any questions!

Since when does black tie = having a band ??? A black tie is just a formal event, usually standard with Saturday evening affairs, men wear dark suits and tie, and women wear gowns or cocktail dresses. I went to a wedding at Oheka Castle September 2004, Vanderbilt mansion a few years ago and my sister went to a wedding 2 years ago at the Waldorf Astoria, all on Saturday evenings who all had DJ's and black tie, even Jamie Lynn Discala (Meadow Soprano) just had her wedding black tie w/ Tommy Tunes DJ, a DJ is just entertainment.
Ditto! Do what you want Marymoon, the ELEGANCE of your wedding in NOT determined by whether or not you have a BAND. Music is music regardless of who writes some rule in a book. I think people showing up in shorts vs. black tie might influence the tone of your event more than whether or not your music is live or pre-recorded. However, if you want to give your guests some latitude perhaps giving them a 'formal attire required' might work better.
ETA: don't spend your money trying to follow someone else's rules if doesn't work for you. With the right DJ and order of events and elegantly dressed guests your event will quite lovely I have no doubt. DO what you want-it's your day.
ditto.

Re: DJ for a Black Tie Wedding?
Listen if you get down to it - this is YOUR wedding and if you want to get married on a Wednesday afternoon and have someone play an acordian for your music and have a black tie affair - then that is fine because that is what YOU want to do and that is ALL that matters!I cannot believe the posts that came as a result of your question. Please do not let others dictate what you do for your day. At the end of the day just remember what is important and that is that you are marrying your soul mate and best friend!!!
Plan your wedding to make you happy!!!!
