I have yet to see a house I like on LI for under $1.5 Million dollars- and that wasn't for anything to special

I just don't like the homes they build here so much- not my style- especially after seeing houses like that and the ones you see on TV

We talk about moving to Florida- I love those style of houses- I can already here my heels clicking on my tile entry way

I hope we really do move- I hate the winter

I have to agree with you... the only style of houses I have seen that I like (and can actually BUY) are not around here!

I think there are plenty of houses on LI for under 1.5M that are nice. Come on, that's exaggerating a bit -no?

DH and I are house-hunting now.....and we have found many many houses we would be willing to buy...and, yes, they're more money than they used to be....but prices of everything icrease every year!

But there are plenty of affordable houses on Long Island...you just have to sometimes look at areas that are out of the way!

not really in Nassau county in the areas we like- 4 bedroom houses that I don't like have been a million at least

we are looking between Long Beach and Massapequa on the water

there are nice houses for less, but they don't have all we are looking for- so hence I live in an apartment for now- we aren't going to settle

Im not familiar with Suffolk but I know in Nassau to get a home like dleeny posted you def have to pay more than 1.5M, Probably double, depending on the area. Even for an AVERAGE house in a good area/good school district you have to pay close to 1M. Its crazy!

ETA I guess everyone has different opinions though on what is an average house and a good area. I know where DH and I want to live it will easily cost us $600-700k for like a 3/4 bedroom 2bath, 50x100 lot,NOT updated house.

Average house in good school district $1M? Nope. There are many decent homes in good school districts under 1M in Nassau. I guess it's just perspective about what you consider average and good.

Oh, houses in Nassau County, on average, are a lot more money than in Suffolk County - hence the reason we're moving further east!
And I'm sure houses like the one posted are at least a million on LI....
I'm just pointing out that you don't have to pay millions to get a good house on LI....no, you wont' get a house with a lap pool, but I really wouldnt' want that in my house anyway!

Totally agree! Houses in my neighborhood...what we like average $569k...Taxes $7-9k. They're just small ranch houses on 50x100 lots.

I know right?! It sux! I know people who bought homes in areas we like a few years ago paid almost half of what they're going for now AND got really low int rates. Now is just the worst time to be house hunting, DH and I figured we'd wait but Im sure prices wont go down by much! My SIL got a great deal for her house 2 years ago, which is pretty spacious, and her house is easily worth 200k more now w/o any major updates! She bought it at a really good time.

Property tax is another issue-every house we like the taxes are min 7k/year. The only other place Id consider is Bayside due to low taxes but then an attached house is starting at like 600k!!
So you dont win

Re: UGH! Look at this house!

The salary thing depends on your field and on other things. I'm self employed and I know many people outside of NY in my field and they make the same money I do! But my husband, would make a lot less if we moved. There is also the consideration regarding schools. There are other places with good schools but you have to know what you are getting into in that regard. Our friends are all moving away but we are trying to stay.

Re: UGH! Look at this house!

I am so tired of everyone complaining about the costs of houses on LI. Yes, it is expensive and yes you can get amazing houses in other places.

BUT
The reason LI is so expensive, is because like it or not it is one of the best places to live period. People would kill to be able to take a short train ride to NYC for the events, culture, food, shows, etc that are right in our backyard. We also have amazing beaches, recreation, and schools. LI is a great place to raise a family. That is why it is so costly to live here.
Also, do you really judge your entire life from the house you live in??? Big deal the house looks like a mansion, it is the people and relatiosnships that go on inside that house that counts.
I bought a home last year so yes it is possible to do it. We did not want to move from my family, so we stayed here. We deciced we rather live near our parents in a smaller home than be far from them in a huge home.

and to the person that said there are no nice homes under 1.5million on LI, I am sorry but there are about one million families here who would beg to differ.

JMHO

I agree with you about nice homes on LI for WELL under $1.5M. The bottom line is that the housing market around here has in fact forced many young folks to move. People who earn decent salaries are priced out of the LI market.

I am very happy for you that you bought a house on LI. But the reality is that the salaries in NY have not even come CLOSE to keeping up with the cost of living. That is a valid complaint, IMO.

well those homes are not for sale are they? you are misquoting me- I said I haven't seen ANYTHING I LIKE - ( meaning that is for sale) under $1.5M

it's hard for me to find a nice house on the water in Nassua for a fair price b/c I am from suffolk and the things I value from suffolk- like LAND- is one thing you have to scarafice to live in certain areas

I am in no rush and I will wait until I find something for a good price with the features I want-

I hate to be Debie Downer, but there's a greater reason why I wouldn't even consider living in LI. Even if we could afford it. Two words: cancer clusters. Unfortunately, I can't take that chance.

I have to give you that one- I lost my Mom to caner and if I went house by house in my old neighborhood - I would say every other house would be affected

Jake wont let me drink the water in LI-
