I hate to be Debie Downer, but there's a greater reason why I wouldn't even consider living in LI. Even if we could afford it. Two words: cancer clusters. Unfortunately, I can't take that chance.

They have done some reports and there are statistics that show certain parts do have a higher cancer concentration than others.

Not really. I don't know. Sorry. I stopped looking into it once I moved.

I presently live in Florida - was hesistant about moving down south - I love it here and my new house we built a house in South Florida for under $250,000. All the appliances came with the house, so did the granite and tile.

when I was single and went away on vacation or to visit my sis in CA, I always missed NY and when the plane landed I was glad to be home and around familiar things, people and places.

now that I am married I think that will matter less. as long as I am with my husband, I think I'll be ok wherever we decide to move

I am so tired of everyone complaining about the costs of houses on LI. Yes, it is expensive and yes you can get amazing houses in other places.

BUT
The reason LI is so expensive, is because like it or not it is one of the best places to live period. People would kill to be able to take a short train ride to NYC for the events, culture, food, shows, etc that are right in our backyard. We also have amazing beaches, recreation, and schools. LI is a great place to raise a family. That is why it is so costly to live here.
Also, do you really judge your entire life from the house you live in??? Big deal the house looks like a mansion, it is the people and relatiosnships that go on inside that house that counts.
I bought a home last year so yes it is possible to do it. We did not want to move from my family, so we stayed here. We deciced we rather live near our parents in a smaller home than be far from them in a huge home.

and to the person that said there are no nice homes under 1.5million on LI, I am sorry but there are about one million families here who would beg to differ.

Good for you that you're able to afford a home. My husband and I can't. I'm sorry, but your post came off a little bit judgemental to me. Of course it's the relationships and the people that matter most - but I don't know about you - I'd like a little room for those people.

As for us, we can't leave New York for another 12 years! I'm all ready to get out of here already. An 'affordable' house is too expensive.

I know that their is a plume around Brookhaven Lab where cancer %s are higher - I think it has to do with chemicals leaching into the drinking water

we had a oil spill in Setauket at the northville palnt when I was younger

we lived with in 1 mile- of the people I know in our neighborhood- My Mom died- lymphoma, Her BF had Breast Cancer- and my Denist wife doesn't have long

I only know 1 other family- so that's 3 of 4

not good odds

I'm not sure why you're so defensive. But I have to say that there *is* life outside NY. NYC will always be a cultural mecca, but so are many other places. I know where I'm moving to - Atlanta - there are many things similar to NY (public transit, museums, sports stadiums, etc.) and the world's largest aquarium (something NY doesn't have). There are also lakes within the state and Florida (whose beaches are much nicer than NY) a drive away. So while yes, NY is great, it ain't everything. And for me, my family is there, so I'm actually moving to be closer to them.

I don't want to live in a house from a magazine...however I like the fact that I know that I could actually afford a nice house with upgraded ammenities...as opposed to here where all I could do is dream.

And your comment about houses is interesting since my DH's brother has about $75K in his pocket waiting to put a down payment in a house and can't afford anything. That's not enough for a DP and CC on a $500-600K house...and that's an 'OK' house at a 'bargain'...which he can't find.

Congrats to you and your DH on being able to afford a home here...that's something most people I know can't and those who do (like my sister's Dr. friend and her lawyer hubby) had to pay at least 1 million for 'nice' and about $12K in taxes...so they make a lot of money, but it all goes on mortgage. I want to work to live and enjoy my life...not live to work.

bad weather in the winter


People manage to live Great lives outside of the New York area- I love NY but it isn't the only place in the whole world to live

See that's a different story. If my entire family lived here and so did DH's we wouldn't considering moving out of state. We would leave NYC and look into upstate or Orange county...and NJ, PA and CT would be options too. But we would stay close by since that's where the family was. But since they're not and we think DH's is moving to Florida (they're currently down there 'on vacation' ) we have every reason to leave. I understand why people stay here...I do and it makes total sense. But it's pretty impossible to buy here. I mean, look at Jennifer's house in PA. How much would that be here? With an acre lot?

Lori - I would take that house upstate in a heartbeat. A huge yard...happy memories...actual land...oh what happy kids you will have!!
