trust me, I already spoke to the Sterling about making it earlier. No can do. They have a wedding in the daytime in the same room for 500 people which ends at 6:30 supposedly. FH and I were a lil pissed and concerned about that since my decorator will need to go in and decorate ASAP!! and plus they will have to clean up and get it ready for us! my FH spoke to sterling guy and kinda threatened him lol since he's a lawyer and all..haha

Re: OFFICIAL Indian 'Desi' Wedding Thread

yea, i remember the guy at sterling not being so flexible when we were talking to him about our engagement party (we didn't want the whole show at dessert time and he insisted he couldn't take that out since that's what they're known for). Unfortunately, most places aren't flexible...especially after you sign a contract. Which stinks since the first thing you do is book the hall....and you might not know exactly what you want at that time so you can't have it put in your contract.

Are you using the same room that the morning wedding is using? Because, if you're using a different room.....your decorator shouldn't have a problem with timing. If it is the same room, find out when the earliest he can start decorating is. Also, for larger weddings, I think they do cocktails in a separate room, but sometimes it can take time to herd everyone into the main room.....so be sure to plan for that as well.

The Sterling guy is such a pain!!! We're having our engagement party there in like a week and initially he said he can't set up a food tasting on the weekend and can only be a weekday by 5 - FH is a lawyer too and I work in the city as well - there was no way we could make it to LI by 5 - finally we moved it to sunday afternoon - but they always give us such a hard time about everything! I guess they know their place is in high demand and so they feel a sense of entitlement! There's no way I had a dessert table even though he was pushing it with us too.

Yea, when he started giving us such a hard time about the desert table....we said forget it and walked away. The contract was completely written out, all we had to do is sign, and they lost us because they weren't understanding about the silliest thing.

I'm going to a wedding there tomorrow...and have been to events there in the past. I've never had a bad experience, and the food is great. So despite the hassle they put you through, it's worth it.

yeah thats exactly what happened..esp the whole timing thing. i was pretty bummed about that, but we cant do anything now..just got to make the best of it.
Yes, its in the same room. He said that ppl will be out by 7 so my decorator can start decorating around that time, but i dont know how long it takes them to clean. but still, that gives her like a lil over an hour! thats it! she's the only person i was worried about since DJ and photographer dont need so much time to set up.
yeah we are not doing cocktails in the separate room. we wont have such a large number of ppl.

Re: OFFICIAL Indian 'Desi' Wedding Thread

Ok i thought i would update you on whats going on. I got the card inserts made, which came out very nice. This is what we wrote:
'The festivities will start
but one hour late.
With joyous celebration
Please join us at eight!'
so we will just add that to the invites, and remind everyone once they get invites.
Also, we are thinking to do the Nikkah on mehendi day, since it will save time for wedding reception, which im okay with. I really dont want to make things more difficult, so im fine with that lol
So nikkah will be done first and then mehendi traditions, dancing singing will begin..thats friday night.
then saturday early morning I will get my mehendi put on, so that whole day is shot for me to do ANYTHING lol
Then sunday I go to salon to get ready around 4..and wedding reception will begin at 8:30 hopefully. FH will enter first with baraat, then i will enter with brothers and sister.
But I still gotta figure out the whole timeline for sunday. I want to get major stuff done before dinner..bc ppl tend to leave right after dinner and dessert lol
Im feeling better as you can tell :)

Re: OFFICIAL Indian 'Desi' Wedding Thread

So I went to the wedding at the Sterling yesterday. Food was good, as always. The buffet actually went really smoothly....they called 2 tables at a time...one per side and each side had its own door to exit and enter out of to get into the room that had the food. The people towards the back got their food last and I remember thinking that by the time they were called, I was pretty much done eating.

The only thing I can say is, for cocktail hour, try to find out how many bartenders there will be. There was only 1 for a good part of the time, and poor girl looked like she was going to break down in tears. It was just a mob of people sticking their hands out and she just could not keep up.

The place looked beautiful.....the ceremony and reception were both in the same room (the main one), the buffet was in the smaller room to the left, and the cocktail hour was to the room at the far left, down the hall. They cleaned up after the ceremony and set up the dining tables fairly quickly (they did it during ch, which was about 1 1/2 hrs long).

So, again, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, and I saw quite a few oo's and ahhh's at the dessert show

Was it in the big room?? champagne room?
Well my cocktail hour will be in the same room. I didnt want to do the separate cocktail room. I do have the option of setting up the food in the other cocktail room, instead of in the same room and they would keep the door open.
We dont have liquor at our wedding so we dont have to worry about the poor bartender hehe

Yes, it was in the big room (they had to open the door to the room right next to it, where the cocktails usually are, for more tables.) And they didn't have liquor either (poor bartender as in the girl who was pouring the soda and mango lassi, etc).

Well thats one thing that didnt get messed up for my invites. the Mehendi insert lol
you dont have to do it. I know people just tell their guests over the phone. Are all the guests invited to wedding invited to mehendi?
Im not inviting everyone to my mehendi. in fact, it will mostly be women, with just male family members and friends. My mom is going to let guests know when she calls to get rsvp that its only ladies.

Unfortunately my mehndi got cancelled - we're having a sangeet instead and it's too early to do mehndi before the wedding - but i was really excited about the wording - see FM
