as with all the other ladies on this site, i am at a loss for words, my heart aches for you and my prayers go out to you, your son and your family, as well as everyone else involved.
i too am a cop and so is FH and it leaves me uneasy that we have guns in the house... when we have children, it will make me even more uneasy... but coming on this job we are lectured and lectured about gun saftey, keeping them away from our children and families. fact is, this wasn't an accident... she intentionally shot herself. i grew up with a father and brother who were both cops and never once did i ever consider going after their guns. this girl, for whatever reason, did not have the will to live anymore - and it wasn't because of that night, or because of any one argument with her father. obviosuly something was quite wrong for this to have happened. i am glad that your son agreed to talk to someone... it will help him through this tragedy. i know you will do your best to comfort him and reassure him - and keep that girls' father away from him. the fact that this man went off on his daughter the way that he did, hit her and is now looking for some children to blame... as if we didn't know this just from the situation, but obviously there is something very wrong with him. good luck; my thoughts are with you and we are all here for you

UPDATE TO THE TRAGEDY....

The girls sister came by today to speak to us..and honestly...I feel like a HUGE weight has been lifted off of my chest. She just wanted to know if her sister said anything..to my son about wanting to do this...and basically what happened because she was sleeping when this took place. I feel so bad for her and her family. We were all crying...
I asked if we could go to the funeral...if the father was ok with it..and he said it was. I guess he finally realizes it wasn't anyones fault..you know? I can completely relate to what he is feeling (guilt etc) and wish the situation could be changed...but it can't. I just want to show my respects to the family....and am thankful that he is allowing it.

I am glad you feel a little better after speaking to her sister and am glad you will be able to attend the funeral.
This story has been weighing on my mind and I still cant believe what happened.

i am glad to hear your son was willing to talk with a guidance counselor i hope it helps him, also that the father is no longer blaming your son and his friend, it will take time to heal but he is on the right track especially with someone like you as his mother, who obviously cares so much about him, i will continue to keep all of you in my prayers

i am so sorry for all of this! this is a lot for your son to handle.
Make sure he speaks to counselors!

oh my god that is sooo sad.. just quietly be there for your son b/c he wont want to say anything, and soon enough he will let it out crying to you..

teenagers are hard - you never know what is going thru their head... she must of had serious problems at home to do that to herself..
