Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?

I am not a fan of nassau bc I feel it is so populated and I have always lived in suffolk and went to school in nassau. If I could live anywhere it would be Babylon Village...5 min from the LIRR, 5 min from Sunrise HWY. Any of the villages on the South Shore are beautiful but are often forgotten about because the town is looked at as a whole. For instance, Amityville is an ok area but Amity Harbor is an amazing area JMO...

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?

My FH lives in Massapequa and the LIRR into the city from there is about 50 mins. It is a great town , lots of nice parks, schools, restaurants, places to shop - I love it!

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?

Babylon Village area. Very quaint town, lots of nice stores, shops and bars/restaurants. Its is also very close to the LIRR, which has alot of express trains to penn. Good school districts too, and close to the beaches. I like the Sayville area as well, for all the same reasons (except LIRR)

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?

Huntington is great but a traffic nightmare getting in and out of it. I hate saying it because its more like a little manhattan with the shops/theater/restaurants, etc. I mean great place, diverse but not diverse so much that its not safe just great people SOME not all parts of Hunt station are not that great but I know driving in there to go out i sit in traffic or get stuck at a ton of lights.

Can't say much about the north shore except my boss lives in Glen Cove and loves it because it is filled with artist/writers and its diverse as well and he says the commutes are not so bad but when he does take a train into the city he drives down to a diff. station. My other boss lives in Port Washington - very nice area has it's WASP areas but not as bad as a few north shore towns.

If you are looking at south/mid shore Plainview is a great, Massapequa is great and I honestly love Babylon Village area - express trains/direct connections to out east great village with life. I live in Lindenhurst and LOVE IT near the train 1 hour commute to the city and not so bad for out east, great village (not as great as babylon but has its own life), the schools are good but I realize its not like Mass/plainview where the incomes are higher and they have more funding. No traffic issues outside of the norm can get anywhere pretty fast in the morning. I also have to say the Babylon line of the LIRR is the best by far. Hardly ever does it fail in bad weather, hardly any delays.

DH and I just moved to Oceanside and we love it. Our neighborhood is quiet and I think by train it's half an hour. We are literally 10 mins from the beach

We live in Seaford and it's a nice neighborhood. Not too far from the city, not too far from beaches. The taxes are REALLY high though if you're thinking of buying.

I am so glad you posted this, I have to move to LI ASAP and obviously since i am not from LI not sure about every part. So curious to see what everyone will say.

Does anyone have info on Oyster bay, glen cove, seaford and huntington? A few places we are interested in are in those areas

I used to date someone in Greenvale, next door to Glen Cove. My friend also dated a guy at that area.....I am not a fan at all of that area...NO offense to those who live there. It is out of the way and all the way off of the parkways. There aren't any good stores around there.....further up North is a lot nicer, again, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, there are some areas around there that are really rich, but that is something find in a lot of areas. In fact, on part of Glen Cove is rich and the other is run down and not a nice place to be at night AT ALL.

Seaford and Huntington are nice, just further out east. If you are cool with close to an hour ride with moderate traffic and way more than that with traffic to get to Queens and the city, that would be nice for you.

Are there any other places you are interested in? Are you looking to buy a house or rent/buy and apartment? How soon is ASAP?

ASAP as in by december lol, so yeah has to be real quick unfortunately which doesn't give me much time at all. We have the closing on my apartment coming up now and the money we get from the closing we're gonna just put in the bank for now since we have no time to get a place and have a closing by december, that alone will take 3 months at least and unfortunately we don't have the luxury to wait. I'll be honest and say that I dont even have the patience, after 8 months with this closing, i just cant do it all over again. With the wedding planning for 2 years, and this closing for 8 months, i couldnt now start the buying process and wait another couple of months for this, i cant do it mentally lol plus i just want to feel settled already, its like we always have something else to do before feeling settled lol. Plus like i said we have to move ASAP. So we're gonna rent for a year about, we'll put the money from the closing in an ING account and let the interest grow a bit which always helps. Plus we are not sure yet how its going to work with DH's job and wherever we live in LI, so we want to see first if its close enough, we are mostly looking at nassau. I think once were there and see what is best then we can decide which part of LI really would be best. Then after some time I'll start looking at places, but i do need a break for a while now lol.

yeah theres other places too, dh likes rockville center, he also mentioned northport and a few other areas. I like more populated areas that have lots to do nearby. Thats why I like massapequa bc its lively, i also used to hang out in bethpage and farmingdale but dh said no for some reason.

Honestly, i was also worried a bit about what you said. One time we had to drive to glen cove but it was so far out there, as in very far from the highway. We got off the highway and we seriously had such a long drive after that to get to our destination. I definitely need to be close to highways and dont want to drive so long just to get to one, and yeah i would need a good LIRR station.

Thank you so much for the info. I just started feeling very over whelmed today when I realized how soon we have to move and I really have to hustle now to find a place.

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?

i grew up in massapequa so i am VERY familur with all the surrounding towns IE-seaford, mass. park, wantagh etc.

Denise - i def consider massapequa to be 'half way' i used to commute into the city for work from massapequa & it was a 40 minute express train ride.... local takes you about an hour.. all in all, its not bad.

i also lived in west babylon for a year and a half... loved that area too - HOWEVER we were like 4 miles away from wyandanch (lived right off of straight path) so sometimes there would be scketchy things going on along straight path... but nothing that ever put us in immediate danger

now, we bought a house on the boarder of bay shore/west islip... PO box is bay shore & SD is west islip... we LOVE it!!! very quiet nice neighborhood & there are SOOOOOO many places to shop around where we live!! plus bay shore has the main st & the ferries to FI so there is a lot right i our backyard

ETA: the north shore is of course very beautiful (glen cove, sea cliff, nesconset, manhasset, roslyn) HOWEVER coming from someone who has a couple of close friends in the glen cove area... i like never see them b/c its a BIITCH to get to.. esp at night - not sure if that would sway your decision, but i figured i'd throw that in

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?

I grew up in Rockville Centre and I loved it! The homes can be very expensive but there are affordable condos and co-ops. It is 15 min to the beach, 15 min to Roosevelt Field, a 35 min train ride to Manhattan, and it has some of the best schools in the country!
There is a great shopping district with gyms, restaurants, shops, and bars.

yeah last year I had to take the LIRR from Penn station to Massapequa to go to a RD straight after work and it was a pretty quick ride, alot faster than I even expected.

Yeah the fact that it is a pain to get to definitely does sway my decision ALOT.

Thank you
