When we were little, we lived in Malverne until I was 6 and then moved to Rockville Centre where my parents still live. Like someone else said, the schools in Malverne aren't great and we went to Catholic school until we moved. Malverne is a cute town though.
I don't know if you're planning on renting or buying but they say you should only buy if you plan on staying there for 5 years to build enough equity in the home.
Another great thing about Rockville Centre is that they have their own electric so it's a lot cheaper than LIPA.
yeah its true, its not great to buy a place and sell after only lets say 2-3 years. Just sold my place now but its close to 5 years and even then not like you get what youre selling it for, i am not even getting half lol, luckily it was appraised high. Also selling price was about $200k more than i paid which is a huge difference.
To the above poster who asked, i am taking my money from selling my place and putting it in a bank for a year or so and not going to buy a place now. The reason why is for one we dont have the time we have to move ASAP, i wrote it in another post the whole long story lol, but we dont even have time to wait for a closing on a place we buy so we have no choice. But also since we are moving from queens to LI, i dont want to buy the first place we move into in LI since we are not real familiar with all the areas and would like to get a better idea of where we want to live first or even see first if we plan to stay in LI or not. Also like was mentioned in this post, i am not gonna buy a place to move lets say just 2 years later.

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?
Denise...Lynbrook and Rockville Centre are nice towns but they are south...meaning your DH would have to travel to get to the LIE. Again it becomes that how far north or south of the LIE do you want to live? Is driving the extra 20-25 min. worth it? Just throwing that out there for you. Plus both those areas are closer to parts of Queens than they are to parts of LI.

Does anyone have info on Oyster bay, glen cove, seaford and huntington? A few places we are interested in are in those areas
We live in Huntington and it is AWESOME!!! There is so much to do!! I wouldn't live anywhere else on the island...except maybe the surrounding areas, like East Northport, Northport, Greenlawn, Cold Spring Harbor...and of course Lloyd Harbor..haha!!
There are tons of restaurants and bars and the scenery is great!! Let me know if you have any questions!!

Williston Park is very nice too. Can be expensive. but hopefully prices will continue to drop. also not too far from the city. also, in the herricks SD which is an excellent SDwe are looking ourselves. we both work in the city & trying to stay close. we are looking in certain parts of westbury, carle place, floral park.
Good Luck!!

espo, you should google the areas that you are interested in and check out the citydata website. that site gives you all the details from race to school districts to crime to total household income, etc.
another great site is google 'my nassau property' and go to the tax assessors website to see the current value of the property (for tax purposes)
lastly, check zillow.com so you can get more information that is not AS accurate (inflated home prices) but a great source.
we moved to East Hills in May and absolutely love it!!!!! Our neighbors are all wonderful..they all came with gifts, etc. when we moved in and really gave us a warm welcome...i neverrrr heard of this area since i'm originally from queens but all those sites really helped us find it and realize that it was the town for us. When I drive DH into the city it takes me 1/2 hour to get him to his door in midtown, it's 15 min from whitestone, and 20-25 minutes from astoria. it takes me 1 hour on the dot to get to the courts in Suffolk County and 10-15 minutes to get to roosevelt field mall. East Hills is North of the LIE and the Northern State, but it's actually the first town North so the LIE is at your doorstep.

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?
btw. i have 2 great websites for you girls to trywww.longislandbubble.com:
there is a bubble map. lists all the towns & gives the history of a property that is on the market. for example, how long its been on the market & how much the price has dropped.
www.properyshark.com: you can search a particular address & gives you some detail about the property

We live in Massapequa Park - affordable area with great schools, close to train, shopping, highways, etc.. I love, love, love it!!! Added plus - we're within walking distance to the village and preserve. My second love is Smithtown. My bro and his fam live there - so much more house and land. Great schools too.

I actually have 3 apartments to go see on saturday and they are all in kings park, which is in huntington right? bc i am sure the listing said Huntington(kings park) unless i am going crazy haha. This guy owns all 3 apartments and i really like them, he told me he has 30ppl seeing the apartments this weekend but luckily he told me that most for some reason are gf and bf, and he would prefer a married couple, so although he has appointments from 10am to evening on sat, he told me to come see it first at 9am to see if i like it so who knows. Also going to see another place in oyster bay tomorrow although the agent is supposed to call me back to let me know what time after she checked her schedule and she hasn't yet. But i am a bit bothered by the fact that the agent wants one months rent as their fee, which ive used a real estate agent in the past and i thought the fee was well deserved bc they found places for me that i liked and did all the work and showed me many places. But i found the listing on craigslist, called the number and she is just going to show me the place, i dont think thats worth the fee of one months rent

are there other highways nearby though? like for example is the northern state pkwy close by bc if so then that would be fine. He can get on the northern state to 37A and take the LIE from there, and also not every job will be by the LIE so if theres other highways nearby then that is good but if there are none then yeah that is a problem. For most of LI, i actually avoid the LIE bc taking the LIE from queens is a nightmare. So i always take the grand central to the northern state or the van wyck to southern state. Unless i have to go far out in suffolk and the LIE is the closest thing to the location but even then I just take the northern state to 37A and get on the LIE there, its always faster this way.
I've been to rockville center with DH when he has had softball games and he goes all the time since he plays there, and maybe its just the field he had to get to but it wasn't bad to get to.

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?
Rockville Centre has an exit off the Southern State (19S) and is also close to the Baldwin exit (20S). If you are looking for an apartment (condo or rental) a lot of them ae close to the train station, sunrise highway, merrick road, and town where all of the restaurants and shops are.

I haven't seen a place yet in rockville center, we are open to it but just havent seen listings for a place i want there. But thank you, yeah if other highways are there then that is perfect. ALso the apartments aren't condo's or co-op's that i have been looking at. Some are home rentals actually and others are apartments in a house or duplex apartments but not in a building or anything. Not that we wouldn't want that but everything so far i've been looking at hasn't been that.

The schools are excellent and location is great. It does lack the charm of a 'Town' but it's is a good area with plenty of parking!!! LOL. Good Luck. FM me if you have any questions.

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?
We live in Glen Cove and love it, however we are debating whether or not we want to buy here...the school district is not the greatest...so we would have to send our kids to private school. Oyster Bay is nice also. It Depends on what you want to spend...any place in this area of the North Shore is expensive. Massapequa is lovely, but many parts of it are expensive...the more inexpensive houses are in the Amittyville school district which isnt too great either. There are tons of nice towns here on LI the key is to pic a town and stick with it because you can get so confused!

my sister and brother in law live in Oyster Bay so we go there a lot. its a great town and they have great schools!
DH is from Mineola. They also have a good school system but I feel like its just so crowded there.
We live in Long Beach. I love it! But I dont know what the schools are like. But you can't beat it in the summer!
I dont mind the crowded part, depends exactly what you mean by that lol. I do want to live like on a quiet block but I want to have a residential and more lively area very near by. I want to have restaurants and shops just a few mins away from us.
I was looking at long beach too but Dh said its out of the way from him bc depending where you live its not close to certain highways and stuff. I used to go to long beach every weekend and i got there quickly from queens, but i also took the nassau expressway to get there so not 100% sure what he is talking about
I know exactly what your DH means...if he's too south or to north it's an additional 20-25 min. of driving to get to the LIE if that's the road he will be be travelling the most. IF FH and I can ever look for a house out there we don't want to be far north because it really wouldn't be convenient for either of us since I'd most likely commute into the city and the Ronkonkoma bracnh is pretty fast and regular and he works in Baldwin which is South. we'd either go slightly north of the LIE or slightly South of the LIE....maybe even all the way south since I can tke the babylon branch into the city also.
I think Massepequa or Planview would work for you guys...it seems like a nice midway point between Queens and Eastern LI and from what I've noticed there is some restaurant life. etc. over there.
oh ok that makes sense. Yeah he said if youre in the middle of long beach it can take him long to get to certain highways. Thank you for explaining lol
Yeah we really are considering massapequa, he has friends in LI that he is very close to and always hangs out with and they all live in massapequa. So that is a strong contender
We moved to Wantagh in July, and so far we are really happy there (about 10 mins or less West of Massapequa)...it's very close to a lot of nice towns, and our commute into the city isn't horrible. We have family in Suffolk, so it's nice and easy to get there. If we drive to NYC, it takes less than 40 mins without traffic...The schools are supposed to be very good too...
oh thats not a bad commute time, for some reason i thought it was further not sure why. What about taking the LIRR into the city?
Try bellmore and Merrick...also close to massapequa.
