Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?

Posted by Espo22

YES!!!!! i think its so much harder for us since we don't live in LI. Everyone likes certain neighborhoods for different reasons, and what somebody might like about a neighborhood well i might not. Not that its bad or anything like that but we all just have different preferences as to where we live and things we look for in a neighborhood. It's so confusing at times bc i look at listings and i see certain neighborhoods but have no idea about them. Now I do go to LI alot, have friends in LI and used to go out to places in LI all the time, so some neighborhoods i am VERY familiar with but some others i am just clueless to them.

Exactly. DH is from LI but he's from smithtown and that's just too far for us. I'm unemployed, kind of (long story) so chances are I will be working in the city so we also need an area in nassau that is convenient to the train. It's hard because people that live on the north shore are very adamant about not buying homes 'south of the LIE', or north of the LIE, I can't remember, I'm bad with directions. But people that live north shore or south shore love it and swear they live in a great town. I'm sure DH and I will be happy in a lot of places but I'm nervous that we're letting other peoples' opinions influence our house buying experience.

We have DH family in nassau and my family in Suffolk. I would love to move somewhere in the middle but not sure what that would be lol..

is massapequa considered the middle? i don't know why but i consider it around the middle lol I might be completely wrong though lol

well Massapequa is the last town in Nassau on the south shore. It is about 1/3 of the way into the island heading East.

I live in Massapequa and LOVE it

Oh you live in Masaspequa! how long now? hows the school district?

I have lived there since June! Massapequa is considered to have one of the best school districts on LI. Its larger than average but offers more for the students than most. Parents are very involved, budgets always pass etc.

Huntington!!...my parents are moving to South Huntigton..great area..very pretty...lov it..and its quite!!!!!

Thank you very much. If i get the job in LI, i have an interview this wednesday for a place in LI, then it won't be bad. I am just worried if I have to commute into the city. I am used to long commutes since i live in queens and used to commute to work in jersey but i also don't want to have as long of a commute again. I am sure it would be less regardless

noo u dont wana commute..i mean from LI...naahh...try to find smth here..i mean huntington has their LIRR..5 mins away..from where i used to live but..i mean ..it would be better for u to live and work on LI!
good luck hun!

well Ive been looking for months so honestly i have to take a job ASAP, with the economy now I don't have the luxury of being real picky. If i get a job offer in the city then i have to take it bc i cant afford to risk not taking it and maybe taking a long time until i find another job. I dont mind commuting, my old commute was 2 hours so if its an hour or under then that is awesome to me lol. I am used to taking public transportation so its ok with me. Also, ive taken the LIRR into LI before from the city and some parts were not bad at all, i remember one time it took me about 30-40 mins which would be perfect

you are right with the economy...if you used to commute than its no problema! u will find smth soon dont worry...!!!!!!!! be positive and think as if you already have it!

thank you, yeah i really hope so. Yeah commuting is not bad at all, i mean if its an hour or under then that is completely normal and acceptable. I am trying hard to stay positive hahaha

yeah its hard to decide where to move to. DH is now at the LI location of his job and everyday he goes to different jobs in LI, last week he had to go to riverhead and was waking up about 5:30am to be out of the house by 6am the latest to be at the job by 7am, so its hard when he has jobs far out in suffolk and has to be there by 7am, well now that were in queens. So i am trying to find a place that is convenient for him when he has to drive far out but also convenient for me if I have to commute to the city. So we cant move too far out in case I do work in the city but even if i were to work in LI, its still hard bc our family and most of our friends will still be in Queens and I know we'll be traveling to queens alot and dont want to have to drive back and forth often if its a long drive each time and in the summer the traffic can be horrendous.

So far we've kinda been doing it on our own. Haven't asked too many opinions and i actually wanted to post a thread last week to ask this very question but i knew in the end i would still be confused bc I would get dozens and dozens of different neighborhoods and like you said, just based on opinions is hard. So we are looking at areas we know are nice and have certain things we want and also looking for it to be somewhat close to the city but also convenient for Dh to go to suffolk for work

See, this is what confuses me. Parts of huntington are bad and other parts are good. How am I supposed to know which schools / neighborhoods are the good ones? Same thing with merrick!

I dont mind the crowded part, depends exactly what you mean by that lol. I do want to live like on a quiet block but I want to have a residential and more lively area very near by. I want to have restaurants and shops just a few mins away from us.

I was looking at long beach too but Dh said its out of the way from him bc depending where you live its not close to certain highways and stuff. I used to go to long beach every weekend and i got there quickly from queens, but i also took the nassau expressway to get there so not 100% sure what he is talking about

I know exactly what your DH means...if he's too south or to north it's an additional 20-25 min. of driving to get to the LIE if that's the road he will be be travelling the most. IF FH and I can ever look for a house out there we don't want to be far north because it really wouldn't be convenient for either of us since I'd most likely commute into the city and the Ronkonkoma bracnh is pretty fast and regular and he works in Baldwin which is South. we'd either go slightly north of the LIE or slightly South of the LIE....maybe even all the way south since I can tke the babylon branch into the city also.

I think Massepequa or Planview would work for you guys...it seems like a nice midway point between Queens and Eastern LI and from what I've noticed there is some restaurant life. etc. over there.

Yeah we really are considering massapequa, he has friends in LI that he is very close to and always hangs out with and they all live in massapequa. So that is a strong contender

We moved to Wantagh in July, and so far we are really happy there (about 10 mins or less West of Massapequa)...it's very close to a lot of nice towns, and our commute into the city isn't horrible. We have family in Suffolk, so it's nice and easy to get there. If we drive to NYC, it takes less than 40 mins without traffic...The schools are supposed to be very good too...
