We moved to Wantagh in July, and so far we are really happy there (about 10 mins or less West of Massapequa)...it's very close to a lot of nice towns, and our commute into the city isn't horrible. We have family in Suffolk, so it's nice and easy to get there. If we drive to NYC, it takes less than 40 mins without traffic...The schools are supposed to be very good too...
oh thats not a bad commute time, for some reason i thought it was further not sure why. What about taking the LIRR into the city?
Oops! Sorry, meant to put that too, but I had read your other post about driving to Queens...
Door to door it's like an hr and 20...(the actual train ride is less than an hr...)we walk to work though, so you could probably take a couple mins away if you hit the subways right...I wish it was right around an hr, but the more west you go, the more expensive the house prices are (atleast when we were looking..) So the 20 extra mins made sense compared to the amount of money we would be spending for a smaller property...

i am from valley stream. i would commute for work to clients into the city and take the express train which was 30 minutes. now i live in babylon and the express train is 1 hour. dh and i are south shore people. rockville centre is nice, massapequa is nice. when our apartment lease is up in the next couples of months or year we would like to move back into nassau county.

No problem
It really isn't bad...I used to live in Babylon and I really couldn't take that commute. This one seems so much more bearable than that was.

I was born and raised in Carle Place and am staying in the area bc DH and I bought a house here over the summer. LOVE IT here! It's a great place to raise a family and the schools are very very good.

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?
I happen to like Bethpage alot. As ESPO said, I consider that actually to be the middle lol It's close to Massapequa, so I suppose that's about right. It's close to the borders of suffolk and nassau, I think that's why I think that.I love, Garden City, Mineola, Carle Place, Rockville Center, N. Babylon , Deer Park, Dix Hills, Long Beach (grew up there), some parts of Oceanside are nice, I love Manhasset, Port Jefferson, Syossett, Westbury, Woodbury, Northport, Levittown, East Meadow, Glen Cove.

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?
here is my perspective - growing up on the south shore (seaford and DH is from wantagh)all of the towns on the south shore from Merrick - Massapequa are ideal and have phenominal school districts. These towns are Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa. The more north you go, the more industrial/commercial. Once you pass Massapequa, you hit Amityville, Linderhurst, Copaigue and Babylon. These towns are Suffolk so taxes are cheaper but the school districts are not as good.
The Nassau South shore towns have a great 'homey' small town feel. They have very little commerical/industrial area - mainly residential so taxes tend to be higher but they are all great places to raise kids. I dont know too much about Suffolk... if anyone has questions about Nassau, Id be more than happy to offer my opinion - growing up and living here for almost 25 years.

see this is where it gets more complicated, the neighborhoods in LI are based alot on the school district. In queens its not like that at all, you can live in a good area with bad schools around well not bad just not great. Also, alot of kids in queens and other boroughs dont always go to the school in their district, they'll go to another town and its very common. When i tell other people from Queens about having to pay to the school district in LI, at first they are confused and say what do you care right now you don't have kids, and i have to explain that it matters as far as home prices and neighborhood, and they were surprised to learn this. So this is where it gets harder bc not only does someone have to pay attention to the neighborhood but also find out about the school district.
This post was very helpful though, thank you

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?
an 09 bride crashing in!! =]i saw this post and thought id reply considering i live on long island and im quite familiar with the whole long island area so maybe i can help.. i actually live in New Hyde Park and its a great neigborhood, but has become very expensive cause i myself have been looking around to maybe rent till we can actually save up to buy our own house and even to rent in new hyde park is too much! =[ but FH lives in the south shore (lynbrooke) and that is a very nice area to live in as well! we are actually prolly going to rent a condo or town house somewhere in the south shore, between ocean side or lynbrook or even rockville ctr! :) massapequa is also a very beautiful and nice town to live in, as well as oyster bay! my brother and sister in law are actually looking right now to buy a house in the massapequa area! :) but anyhow.. if you are looking for the north shore side, i work in roslyn and that is a GREAT but VERY expensive town... so let's see where me and FH also end up living, but we are definately leaning more towards going to the south shore (where he already lives) and renting out a condo somewhere in lynbrook, oceanside or rockville ctr.. but we'll see what happens!! good luck with the house hunting girls!! long island is a great place to live in! =]

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?
merrick is also a great place in the south shore, i have cousins who live there and the schools are great as well as wantagh! i would actually myself love to buy a house in wantagh when we do decide to buy our own house, we are definately going to consider wantagh! :) east meadow also is not a bad town, also have cousins there! :)i grew up in the north shore part of LI and it is true that the north shore is more homey and town life like but very expensive and more on the high end in taxes and all.. where in the south shore its different! FH is from the south shore and honestly i wouldnt mind to live in either side of long island as long as the town itself is a good town with great schools!

I'm from Queens and work in Manhattan and FH is from Massapequa Park and also work in Manhattan. We find our house in Bayshore. It's a 90 mins each way and there are express trains. It's just an ideas.

I am so glad you posted this, I have to move to LI ASAP and obviously since i am not from LI not sure about every part. So curious to see what everyone will say.
Does anyone have info on Oyster bay, glen cove, seaford and huntington? A few places we are interested in are in those areas
I used to date someone in Greenvale, next door to Glen Cove. My friend also dated a guy at that area.....I am not a fan at all of that area...NO offense to those who live there. It is out of the way and all the way off of the parkways. There aren't any good stores around there.....further up North is a lot nicer, again, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, there are some areas around there that are really rich, but that is something find in a lot of areas. In fact, on part of Glen Cove is rich and the other is run down and not a nice place to be at night AT ALL.
Seaford and Huntington are nice, just further out east. If you are cool with close to an hour ride with moderate traffic and way more than that with traffic to get to Queens and the city, that would be nice for you.
Are there any other places you are interested in? Are you looking to buy a house or rent/buy and apartment? How soon is ASAP?

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?
I have lived in : roslyn, huntington , glen cove , and long beach ( north and south shore ) . I have friends in almost every town in Nassau, don't know anything about suffolk and it is too far from the city for me to move there.IMO: there are good area's and not so good area's in almost every town on Long Island . I never felt unsafe in any of these towns. The bad area's are one section that tends to be low income housing , but are not representative of the entire town and I wouldn't rule out one area because of one small section .
personally I prefer the north shore. just my style even though I loved long beach in the summer I wouldn't buy there , i am one of the people who wants to buy 'north' of the LIE
Huntington is a GREAT town ( long beach too), if you want a town with tons of things to do, eat ect this is the place
BUT both glen cove , oyster bay, long beach AND huntington are shleps , 15-20 to a parkway and the Oyster Bay train s ucks . Long beach is about 40-45 min,not bad. Oysterbay line is bad
If money was no object I would move to great neck, manhasset , jericho , port washington ,
More likely a move for me is the plainview area.

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?
Ok...Smithtown is just the greatest....next to that, i have to agree with a previos poster...Kings Park.FH and I grew up in Smithtown, and live way further east now, and I miss it! FH and I would have loved to buy in Smithtown, but just got more bang for our buck further east.
I don't know much about the South Shore, other than they have some really great bars..LOL!!! I do love Sayville, and Oakdale, too...
Good Luck to you...

Re: NWR: Where is a good place to live on LI?
right now we live in mineola. there are so many positives - great commute to the city, many bars/restaurants, close to everything! it was a great transitional place for me - growing up in brooklyn i was very hesitant to move to LI, but mineola is actually not too different from brooklyn (at least where i lived).but we will be moving in the new year to a house in east meadow. we're set to close in late january, and i cannot wait! my BIL lives there and loves it. at first i wasn't sure how i'd feel about living there, but i've grown to really like the town, the schools are good, we'll be close to everything. the only thing is that they don't have their own LIRR station, but it's a 15 min drive to either the bellmore or merrick stations so that's not so bad. the other areas we were considering were plainview, bethpage, wantagh and massapequa. you really can't go wrong with any of those areas.
