Lisa i have the same thing and one of those 8 gallon tubs too.. i need another one of the rolly carts!!

Papers need to be acid-free and lignin-free if you want your scrapbook to be safe.

Pens need to be acid-free and permanent for your albums so that all of that hard work you have done journalling does not face away.

Adhesives need to be acid-free, Xylene-free and long lasting so that you are not re-doing your scrapbooks in a year or two. (Avoid rubber Cement and glue Sticks because they are not long lasting.)

Stickers should be acid-free and lignin-free.

Photos storage boxes should be archival quality since they are for long term storage

Organization

One of the most daunting tasks for scrapbookers is organization! Here are a few tips to make the organizing a little easier. The amount of space on hand and the supplies in your possession make a difference but certain 'rules' are constant.

Take some time and get it ALL together. Gather all of you templates in one place, all of your rulers in one place, all of your pens in one place, etc. No matter what company they came from or what size they are it is easier to have a drawer or box full of rulers instead of keeping the Brand X ruler with the Brand X supplies and the Brand Y rulers with the Brand Y supplies. Merge your supplies together and decide how much storage space each item needs. I keep my rulers in a drawer in an Iris cart. You might want to use a box such as the one from Cut It Up. If you only have a few rulers you may simply place them in your scrapbooking tote or in a 12x12 Cropper Hopper with your other supplies. After the supplies are all together it will be much easier to assess your storage needs.

Write it down. After sorting through all of your supplies write it all down. Keep track of all your supplies and tools. When you are running low or out of a specific supply make a note of it while you are thinking about it. Keep the list handy for ordering online or running out to the scrapbooking store. This is especially helpful when you have a lot of tools, like punches or pens. Many scrapbookers use their planners or keep a small notebook with a list of all of their punches or the names of all the colored pens that they have.

Label everything. Whenever possible use see-through containers for storage, but if this is not an option make sure all storage containers are clearly, concisely labeled with like products together. Organization should be easy, not something you have to think about.

Put it within reach. Place the items you use frequently or daily in easy to access areas. Work in a circle. Place tools and supplies used frequently within arms reach. Your paper should be easily accessible but your 'Happy Birthday' rubber stamp can be stored in a harder to reach area.

At this time think about investing in shelves for your scrapbooking area if you have a desk or table that you have dedicated to scrapbooking. ***Remember that unsealed wood should not be used to store albums, papers and stickers because there is lignin in wood.*** Consider using shelves for pens, cutting tools and rubber-stamping accessories. Consider a pegboard for scissors. Remember that a few dollars spent on organizers now will save you time for years and increase your productivity.

If you use a lot of small items consider the utility drawer units sold at craft or hardware stores. The units can have 30-60 small see-through drawers that hold small items like punches, 'punchies' (the paper that is made by a punch), die cuts, small sticker modules, etc.

A good tote is a must for those who scrapbook on-the-go. Keep a special tote packed with all the supplies you need. Keep this separate from your other supplies. Then at a moments notice, you can grab the container and not worry about gathering up everything you need. This is true whether you crop at other people’s houses or if you just crop while waiting for your kids at soccer practice or ballet lessons. For attending crops away from home, I like the Crop In Style or Crop In Style XL. For small projects on-the-go, I use a Cropper Hopper case or a Cropper Hopper 12 x 12 case.

Avoid clutter. Keep supplies off the table top and put supplies away when done using them. The few seconds it takes to 'clean up' will save you hours of trying to find the supplies when you need them later. If you want to collect scraps, have a designated box or bag for scraps and place all scraps there at the end of a scrapbooking session.

Organizing your photos

Start with the last roll of film you pick up after it was developed and put it into a storage box, then put the next one in back of it and then nest and then next. If you do not have time to go back and organize all of your old photos yet, at least let this be your starting point.

Work on first getting all of your photos and memorabilia into one place. This task may take a month or more depending on how thorough you are and how many places your photographs are stored. Look in the garage, attic, drawers, files, closets, old and new albums, frames around your house, old Christmas cards and letters from family members. If you know that there are family members that have photos that you would like copies of, now is the time to ask for copies. While you are at it, think about all the photos that you have framed in your home. These photos will be the first to fade and deteriorate. Do you need to get copies made to put in a safe place, if so this is a great time to have the copies made.

If you have magnetic albums that are less than 5 years old, tackle these first. The majority of damage done to a photo is in its first 5 years. If you have 20 or more years of photos in magnetic albums, tackle the newest ones first and work your way back. Are your photos stuck in the magnetic albums? Try dental floss to pry them off safely. If that doesn't work you can try releasing the glue with a blow dryer on LOW HEAT for just a few minutes. Also, you can try the product UN-DO that removes adhesive, if all else fails, it should work. The last option, if they just will NOT come out is to have copies made of the photos right where they are. Kodak makes kiosks that will make a photos from a photo without having a negative.

If you have old family scrapbooks read this before you tear them apart.

Purchase archival quality photo boxes (NOT photo-safe) for all your photos. Decide on a negative storage system and purchase it before you begin. At this time you might want to have index prints made of your photos. An index print shows a thumbnail of each shot on a roll. It comes with the new APS processed film. However, you can take your old 35mm negatives and have an index print made for a reasonable fee ($1-$2.00).

Please note that negatives stored inside of a fire-proof box will NOT withstand the heat of a fire. Do not rely on a fire proof box stored in your home. In a fire-proof box, photos and negatives may survive the fire but they will be melted. If you live in an area that has earthquakes, fires, floods, hurricanes or other natural disasters, please consider extra safety precautions:

For a small monthly fee you can store photos on-line.

Transfer the photos on to CD ROMs and store them in a safe deposit box.

Make an electronic scrapbook and place it on CD ROM.

Store negatives in a safe deposit box

Investigate albums and purchase the album/ albums that you will need to start your project. Decide on the type of album(s) that you will be completing. Are you doing one larger family photo album with everyone's photos in it or will you be completing an album for every child? Will you be doing vacation and Christmas albums or will these events go in your family albums. Make these decisions now, before you sort.

Plan to set aside time for sorting, depending on your situation and just sort through all of the old photos and memorabilia. You will sort first by decade and then year by year. If you are sorting for special holiday or vacation albums keep that in mind as you sort. You may want to enlist your family to help you if you have many years of photos to sort. Your children may remember the year that Tracey got a Chatty Cathy Doll and Jimmy got the Hot Wheels Race Set better than you do. Your family may also be able to add details for you to journal into your albums.

Frank yesterday bought me 2 magazines, one called PAPERCUTS, and 3D EMBELLISHMENTS... hes soo cute too hes like the lady told me the paperkuts is new!!LOL.. I love them both! they are expensive for magazines, but i keep them forever cause i love the ideas,, especially one where you make your own color paper with chalk and water!!
