and what slacker-foreigners are you talking about? are you talking about the day laborers who work their a$$ off 10 hours a day for $80-90 and are worried that their houses will be burned down by some punks or hope that the guy who picks them up in the morning for work won't kick the sh+t out of him, leaving him bloody and almost dead on the side of the road??????

Jagral who the hell said anything about Day Laborers? I just said that foreigners coming to this country on visa, permanent or short stay should be vaccinated. Thats it. Many of countries are disease ridden. It was not meant in any discriminatory way. I think airplanes coming in and out should be disenfected also, not just vacummed.

And I don think that Ellis Island reformed is a bad idea. All those gaining access to the USA for the first should be checked, it would benefit them as well as the rest of the population.

and in regards to day laborers I respect them for wanting to work but they are still illegal. So either legalize them or send them back.

this whole discussion makes me sad because at one time ALL of us had relatives that came to this country from another. It could be your parents or maybe as way back as great great great grandparents...but we all were 'FOREIGNERS' at one time!!!

While my feelings aren't as strong as Jyoti's, I agree with her. Many of those who consider themselves 'americans' today are only a few generations removed from having foreign heritage... And while some immigrants may not necessarily bring all the best to this country, many work quite hard to get where they are!!!

But this discussion is about visitors being tested for whatever diseases they bring, and I think that to test everyone visiting the US is impossible and impractical. Because then you would not only be testing visitors coming to US from certain countries, but also American's visiting those countries.

As for the risk to airport employees, it is my understanding that upon taking that job (as an employee in a transportation industry), one is expected to have indirect contact with people from all walks of life, etc. If a person doesn't want to take or acknowledge this risk, they shouldn't walk in the airport.

Just like a person who types has a higher risk of developing the carpal syndrom, but yet everyone is fairly comfortable using the keyboard, no?

wacky, i know you didn't say anything about day laborers- no one did. i just brought them up as an example to someone else's post.

why don't we just have cages for foreigners - or bubbles they live in for a few days to sanitize them before they can be set free into the U.S. instead?

wacky- what about the americans who go abroad to work, study, live for a little while- they carry back a lot of the diseases that are prevalent in other countries. it's terrible how much disease there is out there.

it upsets me at the thought of someone carrying in a disease to the states and it would be nice to be able to monitor everyone but i don't see how that could work.

i think the ellis island thing is cruel.

Yes Lisa absolutely, but back when most of our relatives came over they were checked and rechecked and if they had any illnesses they were quarantined until the illness subsided

just to clarify - wacky- i agree that these day laborers should be legalized, etc but i don't agree with how some have treated them.
