Now lets change this true tale into a scandalous moment. This couple, conjoined twins comes here, we give them, food, shelter and cover the cost of everything. The father sees the wonderful offerings we have done for them and wants to live here. Time goes on and the father sees hmm not have to work yet collect lots of money, files disability papers that he cant work, they are collecting money from the government, and getting treated better then most of us how are we suppose to be compassionate??? How can we not feel like we were taken advantage of????
Withthisring, agreed, that does happen. But there are plenty of US citizens that also take advantage of the system, collecting welfare when they can work etc. Until we find a way to police our own citizens, I find it hard to point the finger at immigrants, as if they are any more or less entitled to take what is not theirs to take just because they are not born here. I dont like the idea of paying for anyones medical care out of my taxes, money that I work for, citizens or not- but it is a necessary evil of our society. If we are going to take a closer look at it, it should be for all people, not just the ones not born here.

just a comment on the twins and these types of procedures where non-Americans are given medical services...this is good for the doctor, hospital and the US...when procedures like this are perfected people will want to rush to the US for these services...and that aids the US economy

hmichick - well said. there are plenty of U.S. citizens who take advantage of the system - they don't pay their taxes, hide income, etc but can be quick to blame 'foreigners'.a few posts back i think someone mentioned something about the language. why do americans expect everyone to know english- it seems self centered to me (although i know i hope for english speaking people in countries i visit since i only know 1 other language besides english).
it's amazing that americans go to foreign countries without knowing a word of that country's language and expect to be understood but then get annoyed w/ all the spanish speaking in the states.
one more thing- what is so wrong with U.S. doctors helping out non-Americans? what about the 'unfairness' of celebrities getting organs before others waiting on the list or celebrity singles getting to adopt children (esp when they will most likely just hire a nanny to raise the kid bc they are busy promoting a movie) before other nice american couples looking to adopt for YEARS!!!!
not trying to diverge from topic- just trying to make the point that there is a lot of unfairness in this country.

I agree, this surgery will enable the Drs to have something published in their name, or win an award, and gain recognition. In a way, the twins are their guinea pigs. This is not to say that they aren't doing tremendous service to the twins.

guinea pigs is a bit harsh...its not like the twins parents didn't have a choice or weigh all the options
and being published and awarded could lead to more grants to make new break throughs

I think its great that they performed this surgery on the twins. Children should be allowed to live a 'normal life' and it is good for modern medicine.'
'I hope that if my twins are born as such that the american dr's will perform this operation on my children and the govt will pay. I hope that my husband and I will be able to stay with our children every day with no backlash from our employers.
'
'I hope that the govt will help with our bills and I hope that my insurance will not deny the claim for the exclusion 'congenital anamolies'

What's a 'congenital anomaly'? I doubt you'll be able to keep the employment though... At my previous job, a liberal employer (who was knows for extensive maternity leaves) would not give time off or PT - 2days per week option, after someone's kid was determined to have problems and needed physical therapy 3x per week.

Congenital anamolies are birth defects.'
'Thats my point Alina, its not always fair and as Americans maybe we can be harsh on immigrants but if they are going to perform the services on the immigrant with open arms well what about the American.

who said the govt pays?
Dallas-based World Craniofacial Foundation, a nonprofit group that helps children with deformities of the head and face, arranged for the twins to travel to Dallas after an Egyptian doctor put out an international call for help.

I highly doubt that the parent' jobs are secure in this case, in Egypt or any other country.

Re: Im sorry but now Im venting-Be Mad I dont Care But the USA needs to make some restrictions on foreigners coming to this country
Well, on a final note (at least for me), I'll say this. This country is becoming a place where you are criticized, called racist or fascist because you want to protect your country, because you feel you want your country to have more secure borders, because you want your health and security protected as much as possible, and because you want to fly your flag, sing your anthem, praise your God, and show your patriotism.
Tolerance goes both ways, you know. People who want this country to be a true melting pot need to realize that they will have to tolerate certain things too! They can't be offended by a Christmas tree or a Menorah (sp?), or by the word God.
That's what confuses me. Everyone is always talking about tolerance. And yet anything that requires tolerance is done away with. Does that make sense?
If we keep placing limits on everyone because it might offend someone, instead of this country being a wonderful blend of all cultures, all religions and all races, it's going to be a place where all you are allowed to be is 'politically correct.'
That's not the America I know and love.

a few posts back i think someone mentioned something about the language. why do americans expect everyone to know english- it seems self centered to me (although i know i hope for english speaking people in countries i visit since i only know 1 other language besides english).

.
I really haven't contributed to this thread much, but I did want to state my opinion on the above comment. I do not think it is SELF CENTERED to expect people to learn English. It is the language that we use primarily here. It is what are laws are written in. I recently went to a fast food place and I could not even order b/c the person could not understand me. I had to order in SPANISH! I am Hispanic, by the way. My mother came to this country and learned the language and did not teach Spanish to me b/c she felt that it would make me stand out (back in the 70's). wow, what a mistake!
I am all for people maintaining their ethnicity and culture, but when you are working in the American workforce, shouldn't you be able to speak and understand english?
I don't think Americans go to other countries and expect to be understood. I have traveled overseas many times with my pocket translator! my father travels and learns the language needed for whatever country he is going to.
I think it is unfair to make a sweeping generalization like that.

Re: Im sorry but now Im venting-Be Mad I dont Care But the USA needs to make some restrictions on foreigners coming to this country
groovypeg- well, then i believe you are on of the many exceptions. i have gone to countries not knowing more than a few words in the native language and had my pocket translator with me but not really being able to use it and hope to run into an english speaking person. i wish i knew the languages- i just don't have the time to do or maybe i don't make the time to learn.i agree that people in the workforce in the U.S. should learn english- i didn't say otherwise. all i meant was that many americans do not know a 2nd language while people in other countries make the attempt at more than just their native language. and i do feel that not trying to learn more about a country you are visiting and its customs and language is a bit self centered. also, with all the spanish speakers in the states, why don't more americans learn spanish?
maybe it's bc the U.S. is a sole power so that's why foreigners know much more about our country than we as a whole know about theirs. just a thought.
