If I can add some of my public health knowledge in response to the original post...

The laws are that ALL immigrants are NOT required to undergo tests when they enter the US. Refugees and those applying for PERMANENT status are required full examinations in the US, which includes many contagious and infectious diseases such as TB and HIV, Hepatitis, etc.

However, immigrants/aliens that are here on temporary visas (students, workers, tourists) DO NOT have to undergo medical exams in THIS country, but they do need to in their own countries before being granted a visa.

Although I understand the basis of this thread, I still don't understand how any of this is has anything to do with catching anything... maybe here or there you can pick up something minor from someone, but in my memory I have no recollection of some huge outbreak taking place in the United States because of a foreigner coming into the USA.. and by the way, I do not count SARS as an outbreak in this country.. maybe Canada, but not here. I think we have a pretty good track record of tracking infectious disease in this country- when we are aware of something going on in a foreign country, we track all flights out of that country (such as we did with SARS)... so how is setting up a neo- Ellis Island going to solve a problem we don't even have?

Jen, I do not have a problem...my post was a sincere question to you, based on how I see you respond to threads where OTHER people do express their opinion.

And, if you don't have enough time to express your individual opinion, well then why are you the 'Queen' with the most posts? I'd say you've spent plenty of time 'relaxing and sitting on your ass' on LIW. And, you do put people down...and the reason I say that is b/c I have been the target of it in some of your recent posts....in fairness, I have a right to say that if you are doing it to me!

I couldn't agree more.

As a side note: In comparison, I've caught more things at the darn Dr's office (including Parvo Virus which is only contracted by snot, basically...so some snotty kid touched a doorknob that I touched and voila!) than there have been major breakouts of serious illnesses in this country.

I'm all for unionizing...I'm surprised that they are having trouble...my dad was in the Post Office and they were unionized...alhtough I know the PO is in its own little world...

DH and I have a good friend that works for TSA, so I always hope for the best for them...although in Phoenix they are getting rid of OT and hiring PT workers to cut costs...don't know if NY is like that now too

TSA has to park across from the airport and take the shuttle while customs can park in the lot outside the terminal.

I didn't have to pay for parking (maybe Lufthansa did for me?) but I HATED that shuttle...it was 8 miles away and you had to get to work 30 min before to make sure you can catch the shuttle...

and what slacker-foreigners are you talking about? are you talking about the day laborers who work their a$$ off 10 hours a day for $80-90 and are worried that their houses will be burned down by some punks or hope that the guy who picks them up in the morning for work won't kick the sh+t out of him, leaving him bloody and almost dead on the side of the road??????

I have absolutely nothing against immigrants. My grandmother came through Ellis Island. So I'm only a second-generation American. My DH's mother came to this country from Ireland in her 20s, so he is only a first generation American.

The problem I have with immigrants is the ILLEGAL immigrants. If these people came into the country legally, and went through all the proper channels, they wouldn't have to 'work their asses off for 80-90 dollars a day.' They would qualify for jobs that pay at least minimum wage. They would also qualify for all the aid that's available in this country. I also don't think they would arouse such animosity from others. As harsh as it may sound, I don't feel sorry for them. If you want a better life, come to America, but do it LEGALLY.

As far as comparing the present day foreigners to the immigrants that came to this country through Ellis Island, there is absolutely NO comparison.

The people who came to this country through Ellis Island did not come over illegally. They did not come over expecting a free ride. They did not come over and complain that we spoke English instead of German or Italian or Gaelic, etc. They did not find our customs, our National Anthem, our Holidays or our FLAG offensive. They kissed American soil and respected this country for all it had to offer them.

That's a HUGE difference from the 'immigrants' of today.

Wacky said something about not visiting third world countries. My cousin went to Africa, and has NEVER been the same since. She was deadly ill for two to three years, had every test on earth and no one could find out what she had. To this day, at least 10 years later, she is still not the person she was before her trip.

So choosing not to visit an under-developed or un-developed country, is not always ignorant. Sometimes it's just plain common sense.

lets say you take the subway as do a lot of other people. A person sneezes, coves their mouth with their hand, doesnt wipetheir hand on themselves b/c they filled it with spit (sorry to be so graphic) then touches the pole.

Now you get on the subway, no room to sit so you have to hold the pole. Now you just placed your bare hand on that pole.

That was my point, WTR. It can happen anywhere, yes...but singling out 'illegal aliens' (does anyone else have a problem with these terms???) is prejudice, not precautionary, IMO. Cause precautions certainly aren't being taken at Dr's offices or in businesses to prevent illnesses.

I don't think immigrants of today expect a free ride - they work hard, like the rest of us...they just want rights, like the rest of us. America didn't instantaneously speak English! I have relatives who have lived in this country almost 40 years and they *still* barely speak English.

Heck, as an American born American, I find some of our customs offensive.

Yeah I don't know, but if I moved to (insert country of your choice) tomorrow, I think I will have a well enough understanding and abilit yto speak the language by the time I am 73 years old. Because I would WANT to, and I doubt they would cater to me if I didn't.

I take the subway every day and I hold the rail.. you know what? If you are exposed to it enough- your body becomes immune... if you constantly wipe your hands with rubbing alcohol, your body will never develope their own natural defenses...
