I am 2 years short of being a full fledge foreigner. My parents moved to this country 34 years ago.. I have no problem with foreigners. Stop reading between the lines.

There is no hate message. Ellis Island served a purpose and although cruel it served a purpose. Im not saying stick people in cages.. But if your ass has TB should you be allowed out in public, not the hospital quarantines you. Thats it.

Making sure all immigrants migrating to this ocuntry now is helpful to them and to us. I repeat. Think about it.

one more thing before i go to my meeting- if there wasn't a demand here for the laborers- more wouldn't come.

since the demand is high for the day laborers, the supply has increased in the last few years (at least in long island).

well, i don't speak for the day laborers so i don't know how they feel about it. i think it's crappy and unfortunate that people feel the need to physically harm others. that's MY WHOLE POINT- i'm not reading between the lines or answering based just on what you are saying- i am drifting from the topic you originally posted anyway so that's it for the day laborers.

why not implement a sort of physical or something similar (blood tests) to visitors to this country that they obtain in order to get w/ their visa to come here?

Everyone is entitiled to their own opinion so I am not going to direct this to anyone in particular. However, many of you are descendants of immigrants to this country, including people who came in through Ellis Island. They clearly did not pass on any stories of what they experienced or none of you would advocate for such a system again. It is a global world, disease is everywhere and easily spread. Unless people stay in their own countries-and that includes not traveling even on vacation or business-that sort of thing is unavoidable. If you mean that immigrants should get vaccinations, that is not unreasonable. However, if you are immunized yourself, these people do not pose much threat.

Jagrawal I nderstand that but its true, they live in horrible conditions. Yet they complain about us.

I think its wrong to victimize someone else, I respect all who are living with me on this world. But sometimes I get the feeling that we as a country have to confine to everyone elses standards what about ours.

We may all be of different decents but we have been western civilized for years. And thats what makes us different. And if you come to this country Im sorry, somethings got to give. My parents have held on to their traditions as long as they could but they came here for a better life and if it meant become a Americanzied then by all means thats what they did.

Business travelers who are from America who travel to these 3rd world countries do recieve vaccines before going.

well, i agree with 'somethings got to give' when you come here despite how much you try to hold onto your culture - i've seen that 1st hand.

i am still shocked by the ellis island thing - there are better ways to go about doing this- such as a blood test/physicals that are manadatory for those obtaining visas to come here- as i mentioned above.

are there vaccinations for diseases like TB- and if so how often do you need to get them? can TB be caught through air- i know hardly anything about it.

these business travelers get the vaccinations on their own will- right? it isn't mandatory? i've been to 3rd world countries without getting shots (i got the shots when i was younger but haven't recently- that's why i ask)

the last time all i did was take anti-maleria pills.

I agree with wacky that we should be medically checking the immigrants that come in. We have so many diseases already floating around we don't really need more. However this country has some of the best medical treatments in the world so we should have vaccinations to treat these people but that doesnt mean that we have to bring back Ellis Island...let's be real here. What this country should be doing is checking the ones that come into this country with expired visas and fly planes into buildings...those are the ones that really should be checked out.

Like you said not all of us have a lot of time to write a long story when we are at work. I'm at work right now but my boss is away...Hee hee so I have some time but we are a little busy.

While medically checking the immigrants is a great idea in theory, in practice, there would be an outrage at the tax increase that would accompany this. Requiring examinations for people seeking long term visas seems like a fair compromise. I'm not saying the system's perfect but if my taxes go up much more....

I have to butt in about illegal aliens working in the US.

I'd say a good % of our (my company's) per diem workforce is crooked. While they are all supposed to be licensed, unionized SS card carrying workers. They inevitably turn out to be illegal, using someone else's or completely making up SS#'s to get the docs to work. To make matters worse these workers then show up at a job, literally throw themselves off a ladder and file a law suit for millions of dollars. We are going through a major suit right now. The guy claimed he had no previous injury, lied during the deposition, even though the Dr. in the ER pointed out an obvious previous injury. Now he is also suing for lost wages. What?!!!!!!! You STOLE someones SS#!!!! He also has more rights that a US citizen, our lawyer is having a hard time hiring a private investigator to prove he is working (he is!) because he is not a citizen. And I love the W-4's they submit with 10 allowances..... so they can get the most in their check and not pay taxes like the rest of us come April. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry I know this was about health, but we are getting screwed all around....

thnk the airplanes should definatly be disenfected. It will protect both us and the passengers. Having not only my FH working in one terminal of international flights my mom works in Duty Free. She deals with international flights all day long. She is in constant contact with people going overseas.

are you willing to pay higher airline tickets...most people aren't and therefore airlines will never do this...

in addition...I worked at JFK's International Arrival Building for 4 years...I sat in immigration for hours at a time working out issues with our passengers...and I never once heard any worker complain...nor did I...of contracting anything

when my FI has to stick his hand in someone's bag not knowing what is in there, that worries me a lot. Rubber gloves are not going to protect something that is airborned.

When my mom has to deal with someone who you dont know if they coughed, got spit on their hands, reached in their pocket to get loose change and then handed it to her, i have to worry is she going to be sick now b/c someone wasnt checked prior to coming to this country

true...but the problem has to be minor then...government workers who have job protection are pretty vocal and liked to talk and complain to anyone who would listen and I sat and listened so they would help me out if I needed their help ever...
