I take the subway every day and I hold the rail.. you know what? If you are exposed to it enough- your body becomes immune... if you constantly wipe your hands with rubbing alcohol, your body will never develope their own natural defenses...
sheesh- what did people do before germs were invented.
So true, I actually avoid antibacterial soap on purpose to make sure my body can defend itself without it

I even had a woman cough on meand I got sick sometime later in the week.
Gotta love Dial soap![]()
I hear you...wait and see how neurotic you get when you're trying to protect your child from germs, too!
I NEVER go anywhere without anti-bacterial hand wipes and Purell!

Yeah I don't know, but if I moved to (insert country of your choice) tomorrow, I think I will have a well enough understanding and abilit yto speak the language by the time I am 73 years old. Because I would WANT to, and I doubt they would cater to me if I didn't.
Kate, the problem is that if you have a lot of people from same linguistic group living near each other, you have ethnic communities develop (which is ok), but often people may 'choose' to stay within those communities and not learn what's outside (i.e. normal everyday american life)

Re: Im sorry but now Im venting-Be Mad I dont Care But the USA needs to make some restrictions on foreigners coming to this country
I am amazed that people can write the things that they do...in many poor communities in the US, there are still large populations where TB runs rampant. These communities are both black and white, all very poor. Should we round up these people and kick them out of the country for spreading infectious diseases? Or those with AIDS? Very thin line between that thought process and that which started this thread. Its a very slippery slope, and we should tread carefully.Or perhaps we should bar anyone 'illegal', those who are not healthy and dont share our work values or want to speak our language. Then we can be one step away from countries like Iraq or Afganistan. Part of America is tolerance for all people, perhaps we should remember what this country was built on. The statue of liberty does not say, 'give me your nice healthy well off people that will make our country better and fit in the model I have created'.
You or I have no right to say who can and cannot be 'allowed' into this country-we have men fighting for these very freedoms (and dying for them) right now.

Re: Im sorry but now Im venting-Be Mad I dont Care But the USA needs to make some restrictions on foreigners coming to this country
I'm not really posting an opinion here, but I did have to add something. As much as I acknowledge where history has gotten us now, the part of me that is 25% Native American (and for some weird reason I feel more connected to that part of my culture than anything else) feels like being a baby and saying 'We were here first!!'.
There is so much talk of immigration, which has obviously become how America was born anyway, but I feel so strongly about the fact that there were people living on this land who literally got slaughtered out of the way to make room for Europeans (which of course is the other part of my genetic make-up).
Yes, it was inevitable, and it was way way WAY before my time, but... it's so easy to forget what our ancestors did to Native Americans, I don't think anyone should feel offended by foreigners coming to America nowadays. No matter what, there will never be any comparison.
That's all.

Part of America is tolerance for all people, perhaps we should remember what this country was built on.
But when a person's health is in danger, tolerance goes out the window. Medical bills add up, medicine adds up, and doctors fees are not cheap.
Are you kidding? Then what happens to children who need health care and their parents cannot afford it,whether they are from this country or not? Do we throw tolerance out the window and let them die? What gives us, as people who are blessed enough to have been born in this country, the right to make those choices??

Please- who's health is in danger? I still don't understand what people in this country are in such grave danger of catching an infectious, terminal disease from foreigners?

I find it amazing how far this discussion went off on a tangent
Free healthcare to poor kids from the main topic of 'immigrants and visitors' bringing infectuous deseases into US.

Re: Im sorry but now Im venting-Be Mad I dont Care But the USA needs to make some restrictions on foreigners coming to this country
I guess my point is that just because we are lucky enough to be born in this country does not give us the right to dictate who can live here, or to force medical testing on immigrants. That goes against the very fabric of our country, and what it was built on. I dont believe that people fought for my freedoms and rights as an American so that I can turn around and say, 'I am an American, therefore you are not welcome here unless you do as I say, or fit in the mold I set as deserving for those freedoms'.

Re: Im sorry but now Im venting-Be Mad I dont Care But the USA needs to make some restrictions on foreigners coming to this country
Strictly from a sociological point of view -- it amazes me that from the very beginning of this country, there were those that were here (I mean Europeans, not Native Americans - thats a different story) and there were those that were coming here. And those that were here didn't want the ones that were coming. There were signs in storefronts saying Job Available, [insert ethnicity here] need not apply. And then those who were rejected had kids and the kids grew up, and they in turn, said to those who were coming 'we don't want you here.'
When we're reminded that someone didn't give your grandmother/great grandfather, etc. a job because they were an immigrant, and now we're doing the same thing to today's immigrants, the excuse is ALWAYS oh, but these immigrants are different, they're lazy, filthy, they take advantage blah blah blah blah.
And that's the same thing they said about your relative too.

Example: 2 conjoined twins from Egypt, came to the US to be seperated. We did not turn them away. We have the best doctors to do this medical procedure where their country may not. We took them in, gave them shelter, did the surgery and the family did not have to pay a penny for it. All the father and mother kept saying was thank you.
Don't be fooled into thinking that this scenario is one-sided. The Drs who performed this procedure were sh*tting a pickle, falling over themselves to have the rare opportunity to try such an experimental, potentially life threatening procedure. The conjoined twins were an experiment for these Drs. So when all is said and done, everyone's back was scratched on this one.

Yabbo...I'm a tiny piece Blackfoot. Not sure which division - would have to ask my dad - as I understand there are 3 distinct divisions within the tribe.

Taino/Seminole here
I'm unfortunately not eligible for any special Native American anything because my grandparents were the last registered members of a tribe. Now that my current family isn't registered, I get squat. Plus, Taino Indians aren't recognized by the state, so once again I get nuttin'
