So I go on vacation to Greece for a week, I am supposed to learn the language? Aside from 'Which way to the ladies room?' I wouldn't call that much of a vacation if I have to school myself for years to learn a language.

If I deciced to move to Greece, then yes, I will be learning the language. And I would be curious to see if they had telephone prompts that said press #1 for Greek, and #2 for English everywhere you called.

I guess I am self centered.... *shrugs*

if you read my post, it doesn't say you should learn the language completely. it would be nice to know a few phrases- yes- like where is the bathroom but it would also be nice to know a bit about their culture and traditions- in my opinion.

I believe that if you are a resident of a country, you should know that countrys primary language. There are many people who live here and cannot speak the language. We perpetuate this by posting signs in second languages, voice prompts on the phone, and now there is a cry for translators at the voteing booths. This is somewhat ridiculous, IMO. You live here, learn english.
I work in the outpatient area of a hospital, and I am amazed at the number of people who come in and cannot speak a word of english! Hello!!! You are taking advantage of what the system provides for you, how can you show up here and not speak a word?! Then it becomes my problem to provide translation. I wouldn't take up residence in France, never learn to speak French, then expect everyone else to accomodate me. It reeks of ignorance and entitlement IMO.

are you guys in long island?? i've never ran into a problem here (with going to a store and the workers not knowing english)

not directly relating to this - but just wanted to add- foreigners (in my experiences) often know more about our country and speak english better than a lot of born and raised americans.

oh i can see it being more of an issue there- i thought you were in long island.

in my line of work i deal w/ a lot of non english speaking workers and know how difficult it is to communicate. my work gets delayed as a result of the communication barrier and i realize that they won't learn english and it will be easier for me if i learn spanish but i haven't brought myself to doing it yet.

No, seriously, that's very insensitive, and ethnocentric. It takes lifetimes for people to be able to afford to come here, would you send them (often splitting them and their family apart) back for treatment (that they usually can't get), simply so you don't get 'skeeved' out (and I would think that working in healthcare you shouldn't get 'skeeved' out anyway-isn't that your job)?

And, many of these people have no way to get health care in their own countries, often times b/c their country is poor in part due to the actions of countries like the U.S., there is nothing wrong with them seeking treatment here if they are admitted fairly into this country.

Umm, is everyone aware that refugees are not eligible for welfare...and immigrants have a VERY hard time getting it at all.

Less immigrants (percentage of the immigrant population) collect welfare than the percentage of US citizens. Immigrants are the MOST LIKELY of low income families to have two working parents, and send their kids to college!!!

Anyone complaining about immigrants on welfare is just ignorant of the facts, period.

Not that my opinions count in this room where emotions are running high, but I used to work for immigration and my parents are immigrants. My mother worked her butt off in sleet and snow, and today I am proud to say that she is a head nurse at a hospital. The truth of the matter is, INS does not want the responsibility of having to check every woman, man and child who comes into america, they have enough to deal with. Being in the policy making business, nothing is ever cut and dry. Evry decision will affect someone negative and positively and no agency wants that responsiblity. JMO

i absolutely agree that should be aware of customs when traveling to other countries.

but i still disagree that we are all self centered for requiring people here to understand english.

I think its the other way around. Refugees do get welware, but immigrants have a much harder time getting it.

THere are plenty of illegal foreigners who are assigned a TAX ID # which allows them to work.

hmmm, I am so sad to see a thread where there was actually intelligent debate going on end up on such an idiotic and blatantly prejudiced comment. Sorry ladies, I have enough debates like this at work-I guess its best to stick to conversations about the Bachelor on this board.

I am curious as to who would be so forward as to say things like immigrants steal in person, instead of on a chat board. Thanks to all who posted based on fact and intelligence, you all made me think!

Who said anything about stealing. Im serious we have several employees who have come to this country illegally and are assigned work id's, which give them a Tax id.

Jenn knows what I am referring too.

I live in an aparment building and I cant tell you how many times my mail was stolen or opened by the people in my building.

Jenn sent me a thank you card from her wedding and it NEVER got to me

I had a huge packet of papers sent to me by my lawyer, it was ripped opened, looked through and just left on the floor like it was garbage.

The other day someone's medical packet containing important information was ripped apart and thrown on the floor

so their ya go, my facts!
