thank you, good to hear it from someone who has experience and works in the system.
Its sad then bc it shouldn't be based on parent participation ONLY because in bad neighborhoods you'll find many parents who want to participate more but can't bc of work, or a single mother who is busing her A** to put food on the table and doesn't have a flexible schedule. Or a parent working more than 1 job. If you go to rich neighborhoods you have alot of SAHM who have that luxury.
It's true the good thing is that if you can get your kid to a desirable neighborhood...but I have kids that travel 2 hrs by bus at the age of 11 just to come to school. It's so sad...they miss first period and fall behind a lot of times. In a way I think if all these kids who are great students stayed in what is considered a 'bad' school the school wouldnt be bad ya know? they'd have these kids to motivate the other kids to do better.
Its crazy all these 'small academies' they are opening are really programs for good smart kids to be kept away from problem kids..,,problem kids all in one place no good influence bigger problem.
Its hard bc I obviously see why parents want there kids in a 'good' school but at the same time if Bloomberg and Klein invested in making 'bad ' schools better by offering good programs within them all the kids would be better off....ughhh this topic is so frustrating
it is horrible, the public school system really needs to help EVERY single school. They should stop trying to separate the two, like you said they should do good programs in what they call 'BAD' schools. Every school should get the same attention and there should be more of an effort to make things better. Its like theres not enough focus on this, which is so sad. This should be one of the most important issues.
How did you feel what they talked about in the debates regarding 'bad teachers'

I am soo with you. I benefit very little from tax breaks, stimulus checks etc. I work very hard for my money, what I have etc. And I am sick to my stomach when I see people collecting welfare checks, food stamps etc...while they drive around in brand new cars and dressed in designer clothes. This isnt my only reason to vote republican, but just one. I'm also a strong supporter of McCain's views on the war, healthcare etc.
I understand what you are saying ...believe me I work for my money as well but I have to say as a guidance counselor who worked in Far Rockaway for 3 years people who are on welfare are not driving aound in fancy cars and wearing designer clothes (maybe a couple drug dealers lol) but seriously this is not the majority. These are people who are living in really undesirable, dangerous and sad circumstances. As someone who worked in the high school many of these kids are trying to succeed and get a degree and move out of the projects. I think to perpetuate this stereotype of all the people getting food stamps while spending money on clothes is really wrong.
Exactly. This is such a touchy subject and each time someone posts about these 'losers' on welfare, I get infuriated. And I know no one called them losers but you might as well. I know mothers who get food stamps and WORK. My sister was getting food stamps for her daughter because her daughters father is a deadbeat. He was giving her 80 dollars every other week and that was supposed to pay for her daughters clothes and food? And trust me my sister has no designer clothes. She couldnt have predicted that things wouldnt work out with her daughters father not that he would be a deadbeat. This is the case for a lot of people on welfare.
I'm not at all implying all people on welfare are losers. And I am not totally generalizing that all people on welfare are abusing the system. But i think alot are...and something should be done to control it. I have a cousin that isnt marryng the father of her kids...so they can get free healthcare, WIC checks etc. Meanwhile, both she and the father dont 'need' this money. I have another cousin that collects what she can...but drives around in a brand new car. People in FH's family have kid after kid that they cant support...just expecting the system to support them. And I live in a town with a ton of this going on. So I'm not totally talking out of my a*s. I agree...some people really need it...and I dont think those people should be penalized. I just strong believe there needs to be a fix to the broekn system allowing just anyone to collect.

LEA-it is true, many on welfare do really need the help and do NOT abuse the system. I also brought up before how yes i am for welfare and alot of ppl do need it but some do abuse the system and about driving expensive cars. I am sure the percentage of those who abuse the system is alot less than those who do not. Didnt mean to put down those who didnt.
ANybody can end up in a predictament that they never expected and one they wish themselves they weren't in. I do not believe in government turning their backs and not doing something to help. Just hope that they do not let those few who abuse the system get away with it. And its sad for those who do need it, maybe if less people abused the system, there would be more for those who can really use it. This is why it really bothers me when someone does that. DOn't take food out of someones mouth who truly needs it.
Yeah its unfortunate. People have a mentality that they can take advantage of the government and it wont affect anyone but it does. I will also say, in some cases, I think welfare can make people lazy and less-motivated to find a job. In that case they need to put limitations and regulations so people cant get comfortable. They know the help will run out and they need to get off their asses.
It is true and that can be a bad effect for some people. There should be limitations and regulations when it comes to this. Honestly, they need to fix so many systems in the US, lets just go over everything and realize that many things need to be changed. Welfare, healthcare, education, foster care system and the list goes on.

I totally see what you are saying...and didnt mean to seem like i am generalizing. I just have seen first-hand --complete abuse of the system. FH's ex collects whatever she can from the government...and she doesnt even have custody of her kids! I have distant family members that are driving around in brand new cars...but are collecting WIC checks for free baby food. I dont mean that this is the norm...but i think it's happening alot. There should be better regulation of who gets assistance

Well the cousin who isnt marrying her husband for free healthcare doesnt bother me, to collect the WIC checks is taking advantage. But someone recently posted an article of a man and woman who had to divorce after almost 50 years together so his wife could get healthcare so she can treat cancer. So healthcare fine. But driving around in a new car while collecting welfare is unacceptable, I agree with that. Although I knew not one case of this happening where I grew up in Brooklyn. I guess I was surrounded by the good examples.

isnt it so interesting how, every time, each camp feels they won and how sometimes it can seem like two ppl watching the same thing must have watched a completely different debate bc of how differently they interpreted things that were said and done.awesome debate.
i dont think mccain lost his temper at all. i thought he stood his ground and i loved 'If you want to run against President Bush, you should have run four years ago.' so true IMO. i know im in the minority here since NY votes dem. but thought id give my input anywho.anyone excited to have obama to 'spread their wealth'?
in america you can work hard and succeed...oh sorry and then we'll take your hard earned money and give it to other ppl.watching the news, theyre talking about how obamas 'tax cut' is essentially a welfare program if you really analyze it. unfort many ppl hear tax cuts for 95% of americans and theyre sold.

Well so far as 'paying for performance' I think that is a hard one bc it depends on the population of kids and parent involvement I mean kids whose parents encourage them to complete hw, study etc. and punish if they don't de better in school it's just a fact. If you work in a school where the majority of parents dont care or parent well then your kids do worse.
I agree with both candidates who said we need to encourage people who aren't good teachers to seek a different vocation. Good adminstrators do this. I mean not everyone is cut out for the job and those who are unsuccessful should be sent on there merry way lol.

I think that what McCain and his team do best is spin Obama's viable plans that benefit the majority into corrupt 'socilism' tactics that benefit only those who are poor or down and out. It is just not true and is silly

you are right espo....and rather than go back and forth on every issue... I simply say this
I am voting for myself. for the candidate who will help me and my family most in the long run and now. it may sound horrible to some...but i am not thinking of the poor and those on welfare and those who have too many kids that they cannot afford....I am thinking of my family and friends....those whose families came to this country in the true spirit of America...the right to freedom...Freedom to me is a privilege and an honor....and all the things that go with it should be worked for and deserved....done!![]()
AMEN!!
I wish people would know the facts and also realize that Obama is a socialist and wants US to pay for everyone else!
he wants NON TAX PAYERS to receive economic stimulus checks!!!

I am proud to say that i am voting McCain...I am not going to get into it like I have in the past because this is not political forum..but...for those who base their voting on the debates..I urge you not to do so.... Know the issues and what each politician wants to do..know what will happen to YOU and your family after the fact. i wont preach...at least I try no too...I apologize again when i have in the past...i just feel that with McCain...my future will be better..because of how much money I make...and Fh...and the company that I work for....because of the life that I have....this is how I think...the American dream started when my dad came to the US at age 11 and taught me right from wrong...taught met to WORK for my money...my healthcare...my possessions....I plan to pass those same values and beliefs to my children one day. Under Obama...many of those things would change...and to me...that is NOT acceptable. JMO....
BTW...not voting is not the answer. No one will ever agree with EVERYTHING any politician has to say...but not voting..especially women...when our ancestors fought so hard for our right to...well thats just awful in my opinion...

These welfare cases you speak of, are they things you see on TV? I know there are people taking advantage like this but as someone who grew up in a 'ghetto' area where majority of people were on welfare, they were struggling and they were not abusing the system. they were trying to feed their kids. Dont judge the whole system by a few bad cases. Where there are no regulations, people will abuse....its just a fact
There are plenty of bad cases out there and while I dont judge everyone because of them, I do not agree with the struggling families living off of welfare. We all have the same opportunities no matter where you live, what nationality you are or what your religion may be. My father came here when he was 17 as an immigrant alone and with absolutely nothing. He worked 3 jobs for peanuts and made everything he has happen on his own and eventually came to do very well. We all have the same opportunities and we all can live in bad situations. Its our choice to rise above them.

I agree with this. I find that alot of people consider welfare a job. I am all for helping people in need...especially the kids in these unfortunate situations...but I dont think welfare, subsidized housing etc should go to just anyone. I work hard for my money...dont benefit from stimulus checks and tax refunds...and I hate the fact that my tax money goes to many people that are just too lazy to step up. The mother of FH's kids collects all sorts of govt assistance b/c she is somehow above a $7 an hr job at a department store or grocery store. I am outraged when I hear these things. My tax money goes to people that think they are above these jobs...so they sit home and collect govt assistance as if it's a career.

I thought it was great that both of them agreed with it, and I agree with the fact that if you are not doing a great job as a teacher then you will be given another chance to prove yourself but if not then maybe its time to look for another career.
Its also sad that this is the first time education is even brought up in the debates. Many issues last night were only brought up for the first time last night

And another reason - my parents divorced and my fathers business went under. We had NOTHING. My mother hadnt worked and there was 6 of us (6 children) We didnt go on welfare, foodstamps or move. She cleaned houses, babysat - did whatever she had to do pay the bills and give us dinner. We went without a TV and when we got older we helped pay the bills. That's how I was taught and it made me the independant person I am today.

Listen, I dont have all the answers; but McCains is not saying he is going to spread MY wealth!!
he is not saying that NON TAXPAYERS should get an economic stimulus check and want to REDISTRIBUTE MY INCOME!!!
He is not shaking hands with Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan!!!
First I want to say that unless you make moret han 250,000 dollars you will not be paying more taxes or as you say redistributing your income.
Second if you make more your taxes will go up to help the US remain a world power and fight the defecit.
You talk about what McCain isn't saying but dont seem to be able to verbalize any clear plans or information on how he will help you. Only spewing McCain mostly incorrect talking points aimed to instill fear in people that Obama is 'scary' He has taught you to fear the other guy while not being able to communicate any of his plans...guess he suceeded
