Re: OFFICIAL Indian 'Desi' Wedding Thread

Hey girls,

I am clearly already married. But I thought the girls on this thread could help me out.

Can you please recommend a good tailor on Long Island or Eastern Queens? I usually go out to Jackson Tailors in Jackson Heights but I am too lazy to trek all the way there.

Thanks in advance.

I've been getting my sari blouses made at JasMinder in Hicksville. If you know where Delco Plaza is, he's on the main street right in front. I think he does a pretty good job, I got my engagement blouse made there. hth

I just called another DJ.
$750 is the going rate.

We paid that much last year for DJ Gaurav for my parents anniversary party.

On to another question, how many stations do the caterers typically provide in the cocktail hours? What is the standard?

[/QU

i think we got 5 stations

Re: OFFICIAL Indian 'Desi' Wedding Thread

I completely agree.

We went all out with the DJ for the wedding/reception. DJ Sharad.

I am just trying to cut the cost with the DJ at the sangeet. FH and I are doing the sangeet together.

Jagruti- thanks for the info on the food. I went to some people for the family style and its amazing how expensive it is compared to the buffet style and when they talk they talk about individual appetizers, not stattions. I'm just freaking out now since I am so over budget.

Re: OFFICIAL Indian 'Desi' Wedding Thread

We are going with Vinny. It's just that he's hasn't been around to go through all the details so I am freaking out. Akbar quoted me 35 + bowl rentals and sitar quoted me 55 for family style and said 'don't do it', since they feel like the food will be cold. I'm like wth..

Thanks for the mehendi info. God only know how much bridal mehendi will cost.

This thing is ridiculously expensive.

the first time i met with vinny, he was great. however, any time after that was a nightmare!! he got kinda annoyed at me when i asked for a tasting. but, he was cheap and the food was great so it worked out in the end. so... dont worry, i've been there with vinny also.

Vinny gets way too much business than he knows what to do with.. he's like if not you, then someone else attitude.. but he can be like that.. his food is good.. he delivers!!

akbar only does indian food.. so totally not worth it.. sitar is great with the food, but 55 is way too much and i am not too fond of their family style either.. food will not be cold.. we did it for engagement at it was a huge hit among everyone.. and the food was hot and refills kept coming to individual tables..

i think most people have about 4 to 5 stations with atleast 2 to 3 dishes each and about 5 butler passes maybe even 6..

are you planning on family style??

eta: i'm the type to enjoy cocktails more than the dinner.. so it's jmo..

I agree with you about liking the cocktail more than the main course.
I want the cocktail hour to have italian, indian and asian while the main course is all indian. Of course I won't enjoy it as i'll be taking pictures then. haha

I'm really happy you have experience with this. It just freaks me out since Akbar and Sitar said 'don't do it'.

I just hope it works out well.

Re: OFFICIAL Indian 'Desi' Wedding Thread

So I had a question for anyone that's had any of their functions at Sterling - I wanted to set up a food tasting and they're like no weekends and weekdays before 5!!! I'm like wth - don't these people realize everyone has a job - so i'm pushing them for the weekend and otherwise I'm going to have to either work from home or come home early (i work in the city and get out at 7) - FH is going to have to work from home w/ his schedule and our parents are going to have to leave work early also - did anyone have this experience or if I push them do you think they'll set it up for a sunday morning or something??
