Re: Greek Brides??

Hi all,

Xristos Anesti. How is everyone? We were at my parents and then my husband's uncle's house yesterday....so yes, we stuffed ourselves as well.

Olga--

I truly love St. Nicks...have gone there all my life but they are all about money. They pulled that two year membership thing with my cousin. She is getting married this September but got engaged last year. She had to pay in 2002, so they can save the date for her and in 2003 to get married. They even raised the membership fee.

For those looking for a greek dj, I recommend Europa Sounds. Call Steve at 516-790-5909. We used him for several family functions over the years and think he's great.

Bands are the toughest part of the planning...so I wish you all the best. My only advice is not too stress.

Re: Greek Brides??

Hey Irene -

I'm happy you stuffed yourself silly LOVE PASXAAA

Now ugh - so I should pay this year AND next year??? I sent in the sheet that holds the date but I haven't sent in anything else. I already told the priest to hold the date on his calendar to be there. They want the koumbaro to pay too!!! I'm majorly venting because it is LOTS OF DOLLARS! We'll see - I'll go ask the priest what the deal it. I just don't want to shell out all that cash DON'T THEY KNOW I HAVE VENDORS TO BOOK!

Re: Greek Brides??

Talk to the priest. It really should be what people can afford. I can't believe they have the nerve to ask everyone to pay so much $$. I think your koumbaro can be a member at any other greek orthodox church. (and I would think he would only have to pay the year of the wedding???) Look into it.

Also, not sure if you want music but that is another $175. (just fyi).

Re: Greek Brides??

When I went to St. Nick's I had the secretaries and a Priest tell me that we HAD to pay the $300 a year. And I was told that I had to pay the $$ ASAP b/c they would give away my date if a member called in for the date.
In addition, if you Koumbaro is a member at another GO church, the church that you want to get married in, is supposed to accept a letter from your Koumbaro's church confirming that he's a member there and not make the Koumbaro become a member at the church you're getting married in. Well we spoke to St. Nick's about that and they said that they would not, under any circumstances, accept a letter from another church and that Peter's brother (the Koumbaro) would have to become a member of St. Nick's if he wanted to be our Koumbaro.
When we went to St. Paul's they actually brought this up to us. They told us if the Koumbaro was a member of another church he should bring in a letter so that he wouldn't have to pay the St. Paul's membership fee.

Re: Greek Brides??

Wow...I can't believe they do this now. I would have been so p--sed. Our koumbaro is from PA and so his church sent in a letter and they accepted it. We got married in Nov....so they must have changed their rules recently.

Re: Greek Brides??

I was told this last February by the secretary there. She defintely told me that they wouldn't accept the letter. I don't know her name, but she's an elderly woman that sits in the first desk in the office. Maybe she was wrong, since they accepted your Koumbaro's letter

Olga, you should definitely ask.

Scoop: I was so upset and so is FH's family. We live so close to St. Nick's and would have LOVED to get married there. But b/c of principle, we couldn't. It's really not about the $$, but about the fact that they potrayed themselves as money hungry. Everytime we spoke to them that's all they spoke about.
Like you said, it should be about what you can afford. What if we couldn't afford it???? It's not fair.

Re: Greek Brides??

Marcela...I agree with you 100%. I think I would have said no too if they made me pay for two years and have my koumbaro pay for two years when he is a member elsewhere. No other church does this. How upsetting for you and your family. I'm sure the church where you are getting married is just as beautiful if not more.

Re: Greek Brides??

I am totally POed!!!!!! I'm brining it up with the priest this Sunday. I am not a fan of the women who work at the church. They have a major attitude problem. But I need to be at St. Nicks. I'm not working yet an as thus my savings are meager. Why should Fitobe/parents pay? I could afford like 100 - not 730 over two years ! Plus the koubaro to pay 365?? Why should he pay?? Plus the donation to the priest at the wedding plus music plussss ase

MAJOR VENT LATELEY SORRY GIRLS!

Re: Greek Brides??

Thanks Irene

Olga: The woman were nasty to me also. They're charging $365 a year now? When I spoke to them last February they were charging $300.

You should definitely talk to the priest to see if he can do anything about the membership fee. They should be more sympathetic to young couples just starting out. How do they expect to gain new members? Last I checked, going to church was about God not how much money you had.

Re: Greek Brides??

not in St. Nick's it isn't.... I remember going to school there as a kid - it was a fashion show & a car show for the parents... all the fur coats, the benzes, bmw's, jag's... it was a joke... the church is still gorgeous though.....

i wish i could've had my wedding there......

Re: Greek Brides??

Marcela : I TOTALLY AGREE!!!! They said - 'this donations is only half of what you should be giving the church. They expected 2 bucks a day each year! that's 730 PER YEAR that they SHOULD be getting. For the church to run, this is how much you should be donating' A FRIGGEN GUILT TRIP ON TOP OF IT!! My FItobe is major POed to the point of telling them to go to you know where. It should DEF be about G-d and not this - yes you should donate something, but it should be up to you!

Lisa: Oh it is a definite show but I don't want a show I want a wedding! I must seriously go kickboxing to get this out of my systerm!

I have done a lot of volunteering at the church and you would think they would cut me some slack right!

Re: Greek Brides??

Olga - do you really have to do it @ St. Nick's? If you have this many issues, and you have them rightfully so.... Do you really want to be thinking about this when you walk down the aisle? What about St. Demetrios in Astoria?

Re: Greek Brides??

no no it's got to be there. I've been there since I was 5! The priest I want to do the wedding is there and the other priest I asked will be coming too since he was at that parish for years. It just ticks me off because I'm not a stranger - I know everyone in that office! Just

I hate that religion mixes with politics and cash. Just poopoo on that whole topic

Re: Greek Brides??

$730 per year What are they insane???? They really should rethink what they're doing b/c they're going to lose a lot of young couples. Fh and I would have sent our kids there for Greek School, but now there's is NO WAY we would ever give them a dime of our money. They left a really bad taste in our mouths.

This makes me sooo mad, it's not even funny. I can't believe them. This is very sad.
