Re: ~OFFICIAL DOUGLASTON MANOR THREAD~
I went to Douglaston on Sunday to take a look at the round tables... I was hoping to use the 72 inch tables to fit 10 people so that everyone has elbow room but Holy Cow, they are huge!! They take up so much of the dance floor! :(I don't think I will be using them... I will unfortunately have to squeeze 10 people at the 60 inch table -- it will be a little tight so I hope my guests won't mind! It's making me a little nervous :(

I don't know what to expect!
I got the mini Viennese and was impressed. My guests loved it too with the liquors, coffee, Italian desserts and rainbow cookies. It was good enough for me. If you want a true Viennese with all the choices of cake etc, then it won't do. But, I don't find too many people crave cake or sweets anyhow especially with all the drinking going on. See pics.

Re: ~OFFICIAL DOUGLASTON MANOR THREAD~
Hey everybody,This is actually Jason, not Tami. We've both posted on here over the past year (although I feel like I might be the only guy in the NYC area to do so).
We are back from the honeymoon and just wanted to give you a quick rundown of our opinions on the wedding and a mini-review of the most important things.
Photog - Joe Sanfilippo --- extremely reasonable prices and a young down to earth guy. Engagement shots were included with the package. We just got our proofs back and haven't sorted through them all, but he knows what he is doing and the pictures we have seen, look great. He makes you very comfortable. I constantly said that he seemed like someone we would want to have a beer with. joesanphoto.com
DJ - FM Entertainment - We had the owner Frank and he was awesome. Again, completely reasonable prices ($895 for the basic package). From start to finish, people were on the dance floor. He played what we asked for and other similar songs that people loved. The best part was that one of the maids of honor speeches referenced Richard Marx 'I'll be right here waiting for you'. And although it wasn't requested he was paying enough attention that he played it during the reception. I would highly, highly recommend him and his company. I can't tell you how great a job he did.
Douglaston Manor
The good -
It is beautiful. Everyone commented on how amazing the place looks. And for anyone who's been there, it isn't your typical reception hall. Also the outside grounds (at least this time of year) provide for beautiful photos with all of the flowers.
Plus it's reasonable in terms of prices.
Thomas, the BM, was great to work with throughout the entire process. Quick to respond to any phone call.
The food was good. No complaints. And cocktail hour was great.
We were most nervous about the dance floor size (we had 14 tables and 151 people) but there seemed to be enough room for everyone. Some of the tables did hold 12 people easily.
The cake was awesome. Cannoli filing was amazing.
The bad-
We were told from the start that if it rained we would be in the glass room for our cocktail hour. We asked a few weeks before if anything else was going on there that night and it turned out that there was a retirement party in the glass room. No big deal considering it didn't rain anyway (the backup plan was the conservatory). However, because the retirement party needed access to the lobby, they closed the far back wall where the bar should have been. Not only did it close things off in terms of air flow, but we lost a bar in the back. We were never told before hand that this would be the case. Again, people at the wedding had no idea, but for us it was very problematic.
Chris was supposed to be our MD, but his wife had a baby the night before (we were aware this might happen). We ended up with Anthony (whom we never had met). Although I'm not sure, it seemed like it was his first wedding solo at DM. He was running around a little too much early on and not as attentive as I would have liked. An example, we asked for chicken fingers for the 4 kids in the wedding, and he said 'I'll see if we can do that.' For the money we paid, the answer should be, 'Yes' However, I must say that by the end of the night, he did a solid job and seemed to get more comfortable with what he was doing.
On a personal level (and I didn't fight it)...we were told when we signed our contract, that we'd have five bottled beers. At the final meeting, we were told three. Again, nothing huge, but a little annoying.
The last minor thing (and you get this at a lot of places where high school students work), some people didn't get coffee when they asked for it. It appeared that they were forgotten.
The Ugly:
Whether as a result of the back being closed or A/C issues, or people dancing for almost the entire reception (from start to finish, minus speeches, pasta course and dinner, people were on the dance floor), there was almost NO air conditioning. People were sweating bullets the entire night. The young people and some of the older folks had no problem. But for the older cranky people we heard some complaints. While we asked them to turn it up, they said it was on full blast. Trust me, it was HOT. Guys had completely sweat through their shirts. I have photos to prove it.
Overall, we would recommend DM to any bride/groom. We looked back at our contract and the things we were told weren't actually in writing (glass room, beer selection, etc.) However, our wedding was awesome. People have mentioned it was one of the funnest they have been to, so we aren't complaining. I just wanted to give you all a heads up on some of the minor issues (which in no way ruined the night at all) that we faced.
Good luck to all future brides (and maybe grooms) and thank for all of your help along the way. If anyone has any questions, please let us know.
Tami and Jason

As far as I understood, I don't think your BM is automatically working the night of your wedding. We had Chris as a BM but he wasn't sure he would be our Maitre D that evening although we requested him so he did his best and did our wedding. Anthony should be spruced up by the time of your wedding one would think. I am sure he wasn't brand, spanking new to the business when they hired him. Maybe to just DM and his first night.
Deep breath! :)
