I came from a family that didn't have much, and every thing I have I worked extremely hard for. However, that doesn't prevent me from having a little fun with the ladies on this board. We have been through the ups and downs of planning a wedding, and now we are here supporting each other in our new married life. Thus, we are entitled to have a little fun. If you visit this board often, you will see that it is not always like this.

I guess I was lucky... Aside from some doubles that had to be returned, I was thrilled with every thing I got.
I had 3 showers, so there was plenty of room for surprises, but the only surprises I got were good ones.

I guess reading this, I was pretty fortunate and most people stuck to the registry or gave me gift cards or cash. The things that I got that I did not register for were actually pretty nice.

I did get a bunch of serving pieces/chips and dips that aren't my style and I can't return. Like the giant seashell chip and dip.

Also, one lady made my bag for gift cards. It was a very nice thought but it didn't match my dress and was so not my style. My mom had already bought me one that matched as well. Hers was white and very lacy (my dress was ivory and detailed - it clashed). I felt obligated to use...I had DH's grandma hold it and guard our cards.

I got a lot of stuff not on my registry. My DH aunts gave me the rest of the lovely Multicolored plate set that that had also given me for our engagement…I also got three of the exact same pot (that I registered for at fortunoffs) and would you know I opened them back to back to back…People try to be creative and the stuff just ends up in a closet somewhere

I have an EBAY pile going, and alot of it is stuff I got at the shower that I dont care for. (and 2 years later, i see that it will just sit around...).. Lenox (hate Lenox - I like colorful things not bland ivory colored things ) Frames, vases, some Mikasa frames...its a shame these things cost so much, and will probably sell on ebay for less than half...

I got a lot of stuff I wanted but one thing I got from my sister in law was this basket of crap! These bobble head dolls with Gary and my faces on them, an empty box of VIAGRA (um hello, I hope Gary doesn't need that YET), this horribly plaid lingerie piece and these animal print 'tightie whities' for Gary this is his sister by the way! She proceeded to have nothing to do with any gifts any one else gave me but when this gift came out, she had to announce everything in the basket. I about died, I wanted to KILL HER! I just didn't think it was appropriate...

We received a Demitass Set. Which I didn't even know it was a Demitass set. I don't even know if I'm spelling it correctly! What on earth we would do with this, is beyond me. I can't even regift it because then we'll be the ones who gave the useless gift. And it had no tag on it at all so that I could bring it back. DH and I think it was a regift to us. I would rather have gotten my snack table set.
Other than that though, we got a lot of great things. There were a few things that I returned (like the whole duck themed bathroom set), but overall we were shocked at everyone's generosity.

Shamma: Sorry, not photo of the actual cross as it was so ugly and not us that I gave it to Luke (since it was his friend who gave it to us) to dispose of. I assume he gave it to his mother whose home is a virtual shrine to ugly knick nacks :D

And here is that frame that makes me sick thinking someone spent good money on and is rotting away in our closet:

(i tried to return it to macys but they only wanted to give us something like $40 in credit for it despite the fact it was selling for $139 at the time. On principle alone, I couldnt do it! So it sits in the box in our closet.)

These arent terrible presents in of themselves....but if its the thought that counts - what sort of thought goes into buying crystal for a couple that doesnt have room for it, china knicknacks for a couple that doesnt want/use/have room for china anything or a cross for a couple that is not very religious?

I cant bring myself to be a regifter - so what do I do with these things?

Oooh I forgot about my dish set. For a wedding gift, one of my DH's male cousin got us a whole set of china from some fancy NYC store. The problem is I registered for a very low-key china set and a C&B everyday dish set which I got at my shower and loved and was using. This set was pastels and flowery and each different part of the set was a different color. Pink plates, peach cups and saucers, blue soup bowls, etc. It was nice but so not our taste and to boot it was over $800. I just don't understand why someone would buy someone a whole china set.

We returned it (and had problems doing so) but found that it was the nicest thing in the store (at least from our taste). We now have a gift certificate (good for a year) at this store. It is so overpriced too. We could get a 8 glasses for this price! I am so not like that..I can't spend $800 on 8 glasses. I am bad the store is ok just different and I am not into that stuff (plus most everything is pastels and everything in my decor is pretty much earthtones.)

I am willing to sell the gift certificate for less money if anyone likes this store....Give you a $800 GC for $600 or something.

I have no problem posting about the gifts I did not want. There are less fortunate and this is true. But I am paying every dime for my wedding, including e-party and rehearsal dinner. I dont get any support or help from anyone when it comes to my wedding. SO I feel totally ok with making a few jokes about gifts I dont really like. Nothing else has been handed to me. Infact FH and I can barely afford to get the things off the registry that we need. Believe me, I understand the less forturnate. I have grown up that way!

One gift we got, although VERY thoughtful, I just couldn't believe it when I saw it. It was from my great aunt. It was a double silver frame...on one side a printed picture of Roland and I after we lit our unity candle with our names and wedding date printed under the picture. Mind you it was printed on regular printer paper so the quality of the picture was horrible (grainy and both Roland and I have red eye so we look like we are possessed). THEN the other side is a poem that she retyped about 'Marriagge'. And throughout the poem is misspelled words, including 'marriagge' over and over.

I can't bear to throw it away though because I think it was so thoughtful, but I can't really display it either! I think I may just put other wedding pictures (printed on actual photo paper) in the frame and keep what she made us underneath.

I got several gifts that weren't on my registries, but a most of them were made for me by friends or relatives. Close to everything was not my style or taste, but what can you do with them when someone made it for you?? There were 3 other gifts of household items that weren't on my registries, but I have used (or will use them) anyway.

The first, a service for 4 set of silverware...cheap stuff. I have no idea where it was purchased, so I could not return it. But, who needs just service for 4??? Well, since we've been living at my parent's house for 6 months, and our 'real' everyday dishes and silverware are in storage, this cheap set came in real handy. But, if we hadn't been living here, this probably would have been given to my little brother for his apartment.

The other two gifts were very similar...two sets of 4 wine glasses (not matching) that have colored tops, and clear stems. I guess these were popular a couple of years ago, but I would have *never* picked these for myself. I decided to keep them b/c if we ever have a cocktail party, they would be fun to use, and I wouldn't be heartbroken over one of them getting smashed by accident (like I would be if someone broke our good crystal).

I have enough picture frames, crystal or otherwise- to outfit a store! A rubbermaid container FULL! I have only used about 2 or 3 of them. Maybe w/ Julianne's arrival- we will give people pics of her ALREADY framed! hmmm....

a mickey and minnie mouse cake topper- arrived after the wedding and not our theme. ( we used Robs parents cake topper- 40 years old! and topped each child's wedding cake!)

A bridal doll from my godmother. Tradition in Italian families that the godparents give this as part of their gift. Works a LOT better if it looks like the bride in SOME way. ( I dont have blond hair or blue eyes!) regifted it as a communion doll to Robs cousin.

Tiffany votive. Just one ugly crystal votive holder. Guess the giver thought the idea that it came from Tiffany was enuf to carry it off. Would have preferred a much simplier gift

I am SOOOO looking forwqard to spring so I can have a garage sale and unload these items!! Anyone interested???

BEST things we recieved:

Bridal party chipped in and bought us a WEBER GRILL (silver edition) ! yay!
Robs aunt made athe 'money bag' with lace and material I found in my moms closet. ( mos is deceased)
Same material was incorporated in a 'treasure' box this aunt also made.


Another Family friend made the pillow for the reing bearer- same material used again. She also crotched a blanket for us.
