Re: Bora Bora Thread

Kerri, question for you...I am staying over water in Bora Bora, but not in Tikehau...I heard that when you stay on land that you can encounter enormous cockroaches..not because it is dirty, just because you are in a tropical climate. I have a bug phobia...did you see any? (crossing fingers you say no)

I probably shouldn't tell you this... but I did see some. I will tell you though I only saw them in or near the garden private pool bungalow, not in the overwater bungalow. The overwater bungalow had moths that would sometimes fly in... and once a yellow yellow yellow (super yellow) weird bee flew in our room.

The roaches are HUGE, about the size of your thumb and I SWEAR they were after me!!! They always came out at night when I was on the deck... and they would come up through the cracks. Once I went to walk outside onto the deck barefoot and almost stepped on one!!! And another time... ahhhh thinking about this freaks me out... but another time I was putting sunblock on DH and I felt something kinda hard with some force hit my arm. I looked down and it was one of those HUGE ROACHES!! It fell from the ceiling!! And it me on the way down. This is all why i was convinced they were after me. Twice there were huge roaches on the bed... once it wasn't too far from my pillow when I was sleeping... I just happened to wake up and saw it there. I flipped out and woke up DH!!!! ( O M F G) and the other time it was by the foot of the bed when we were awake!!

I was PETRIFIED of the bugs esp these huge roaches!!! At night DH had to tuck me in.. meaning tuck the sheets into the mattress all around me and then I made him spray bug spray all over the perimeter of the bed and by where the sheet was tucked it. Sure it smelled a tad chemically.... but I prefered the chemical smell to the alternative!!! I even had ngihtmares about the bugs and at times slept with the sheets over my head and all. I was so scard. DH thought I was a foolish baby! But they weren't after him.. they were after me!!!!

Also, once I woke up and there was a lizard on the ceiling... not huge but rather large!! I woke DH up and he mumbled 'he will go away' and then doze off again. GGRRR!!!!

But they won't kill you. Haha!!

Just remember you asked!!!!!

It sounds like you had a scary experience! I'm scared of bugs too and those monster bugs sound terrifying!!!

Note to self: Do not stay in a garden bungalow. ONLY overwater!

Re: Bora Bora Thread

Yes, I most definately did ask..because I had already heard about this. I am staying in an over the water bungalow in Bora Bora....but a beach bungalow in Tikehau. I am a little worried now because I may have a damn heart attack if one of those giant suckers comes near me. Maybe I should see if we can change to over water for Tikehau too.....I am paying a fortune for this trip anyway(well a fortune to me)...what's a little more $$$.

Thanks for your honesty!!

Re: Bora Bora Thread

We decided 'what the heck' and upgraded to a Over Water Suite on Tikehau due to the fact that I have confirmed the bug issue with Kerri....I was terrified of this, and I know I will be totally freaked out if a bug falls on my head or I roll over and one is in my bed. At this point..we spent too much on t his trip, so what the heck.

Re: Bora Bora Thread

Tikehau is an atoll (different than an island because it is a lagoon surrounded by land, and much smaller than an an island...or something like that..dont quote me) It is part of the Tuamoto Islands where as Bora Bora is part of the Society Islands..all make up French Polynesia.

Anyway..as for the bugs...I do not think they pose a bigger problem on one island over the other....it is just a common problem because you are in tropical climate. It does not mean the resort is dirty. It's just like how lizards are common in the tropics...so are giant bugs.

If it makes you feel any better, my travel agent who frequently travels there told us she never encountered a problem...I am just highly phobic and probably would have just put up with it...FH was the one looking for an excuse to upgrade to a suite!

There's only one restaurant on Bora Broa that you need to make reservations months in advance. We didn't go to that restaurant and I also hear it's very prices!

We usually made dinner reservations the same day.

TOTALLY!!

GUYS DO NOT BE SOO SCARED TO GO BECAUSE OF BUGS!!! It's not like it's INFESTED with bugs... it's just a tropical place... you get that in any sort of island that's tropical.

Jamiaca is loaded with SAND FLEAS!!! Which if you ask me are actually WAYYYY worse!!

Those are just things you encounter when you travel... different climates... different bugs... different everything.

It's NOT THAT BAD. I mean I won't lie there were the issues and I swore they were after me and I was freaked out... but it's not like every second of every day there was a bug staring at me! They ARE there but it's OK. It's not HORRIFIC in that way. You can go and still have a great time... and who knows... you might even be lucky and not even see one bug!!

There are also a lot of stray dogs and cats on the islands. Not harmful animals at all. The people there just generally don't have dogs and cats as pets like we do... instead they roam free on the islands. Its interesting. And just for the record... I'm kinda scared of stray dogs... and i'm NOT a dog person in general (I just can't read dogs the way I can a cat) and I wasn't scared of them at all.

Yea the falling from the ceiling was a bit much... mainly because it hit me on the way down. But I'm OK and I'm alive and it didn't kill me or do anything to me. And trust me... I'm quite the squeeler too when I see them!!! Just a part of the tropics I suppose!
I wouldn't trade in going there because of some bugs. You might not even see any. Don't worry about it at all... just bring bug spray and forget about the possibility of bugs. When you think about going think of the beautiful blue waters and the sunset and the LOADS of tropical fish etc. Trust me... focus on that part instead of the bugs!!!!

I am an old bride here, coming on to delete my stuff. But I just wanted to say, although i never saw any roaches on my honeymoon - the experience as a whole would be worth it. Its like being in paradise. I am married 3 1/2 years and me and DH still talk about it, like we went yesterday. And this is a person who is friggin petrified of roaches to the point I have bad dreams. But knowing what its like in Bora Bora, I would still go back there and risk it..

Good luck to all the brides about to get married and planning their wedding. But trust me the best part is going to be the honeymoon

A link to my Tahiti Review if interested, pls note it may be outdated
