Speak Up and Be Heard: Making a Memorable Speech

Giving a toast to the happy newlyweds is a time-honored tradition. But, speaking up, or speaking out… can leave lots of otherwise vocal individuals speechless.
Here are some tips and tricks on how to give a marvelous and memorable speech
- Keep it simple: Focus on taking the spotlight off you and putting it on the happy couple. Remember, when giving your toast, less is often more. Rather than potentially “embarrassing” stories about pre-marital escapades, focus on how you know the bride or groom, perhaps a romantic anecdote (if appropriate) about how they met or knew the other was “the one” and a salute to the two and their new union.
- Write it down: You may know exactly what you want to say and how to say it…but it’s not uncommon to “draw a blank” when you actually stand up in front of all the guests at your friends’ wedding. Prepare ahead of time. Consider jotting your thoughts down in script form well in advance of the big day so you can rehearse and change anything you don’t like or feel doesn’t sound right. You may even want to show it to the bride and groom and get their consent and approval.
