Best Man Basics: The Responsibilities Of The Quintessential Wingman
May 17, 2017 01:19 PM Back
If you think being a Best Man spells plenty of “partying” as your best bud prepares to say “I Do”…think again. Your best bud may be the leading man tying the knot…but you are his main understudy and stand in.
1. It’s your job to be encouraging. You may not be ready for a best bud who is transforming into “husband” material…but you can’t discourage his metamorphosis. Instead it’s up to you to be encouraging and supportive and help him with his new transformation.
2. You need to be his right hand man and that means assuming responsibility. No, it’s NOT just about the beer, bonding and partying…but about helping him with all his pre-nuptial “honey dos”. So, what does that mean for you, well, that you have to be and stay engaged and help him shine by remaining responsible, dedicated (to the wedding) and charming.
3. You need to channel your inner gentleman. Yup…you are no longer just of bunch of “wild and crazy guys” but one of you is about to make the ultimate sacrifice and freely give up his freedom and his former life and lifestyle. Try to be understanding and understand that this transition will also bring with it some stress and perhaps a variation of mixed emotions and moods, so you will need to adjust YOUR disposition and attitude to accommodate him.
4. You’ll have to put on your game face: You WILL be met with several challenges…most likely by the bride to be, even if indirectly through him. You will have to learn how to bite your tongue and hold in your true emotions (unless its something serious that MUST be addressed).
5. You “may” have to reinvent yourself. If you want to “fit in” or continue hanging out with your best bud, you may have to redefine your priorities. After all, you are ALL maturing and it just may be time to admit (to yourself) that this marriage deal isn’t so bad after all.
