Let’s Do The Twist: Conventional Twists On Classic Customs

Your something old can also be your something new as contemporary couples get creative with timeless traditions.
1. Let Them Eat Cake: Serve up a slice of your favorite decadent dessert. Work with your baker to create a custom confection based on one of YOUR favorites or a favorite family recipe. Consider a brownie cake, an apple gingerbread pudding cake or a multi-tiered ice cream cake? The options are deliciously endless.
2. Fancy Footwork: Consider stepping it up when you step out on the dance floor. Whether it’s your first dance (as Mr. and Mrs.) or your dance with mom or dad…opt for something with more entertainment value than just your “traditional” slow dance. Consider instead a Paso doble, a tango, a waltz, or any dance ethnic or otherwise that calls for some serious “side steppin”.
3. Toss The Bouquet Toss: Rather than calling your gal pals out and making THEM the center of attention (which some may not welcome so much) consider making the tradition more meaningful. Hand your blooms over to your mom or grandma as a keepsake. After the celebration have it dried and framed so it can be kept as a family heirloom.
4. Raise Your Glass: While its customary for your parents , your maid of honor and/or best man to “cheer” YOU on, why not return the favor with a special toast to those who are a special part of your life and your celebration. Better yet… hand out personal, customized letters or notes for each of guests thanking them for coming or at least those who hold a special place in your heart.
5. A “Twist” On Parent Dances: Instead of the customary father-daughter or mother son dance, why not also include dances with grandparents and special aunts and uncles (throughout the evening). And, while you and dad or mom are out on the dance floor, why not invite other moms, dads and their children (if present) to join you.
6. Cater To Your Littlest Guests: In lieu of or in addition to your garter toss, why not have a stuffed animal toss and hand out a special prize to the lucky kid who catches it. And, if you’re having an outdoor affair, you may also want to include a piniata filled with (gourmet or classic) candies for ALL to enjoy.
