Staten Island Chic: A Stylish “Retro” Celebration

One of the most prevalent stereotypes about Staten Island is that it’s quintessential New Yawk on steroids. And, along with that the preconception that most Staten Islanders are simply transplanted primarily Italian-American Brooklynites.
So, hosting an all-out All-American wedding extravaganza with authentic inspirations from Little Italy is what allows Staten Island couples to stand out. And, what could be more Italian-American than a classic Football wedding taken to the next level.
These low budget weddings were made popular in the 1940s to make it affordable for young couples to tie the knot. Primarily family parties hosted at someone’s home (usually the parents of the bride or groom) featured homemade foods typically consisting of sandwiches that were literally tossed out to guests by an appointed member of the family or bridal party.
Here are a few tips and tricks on how to stay true to tradition but add a little flair or finesse to this fantastic Italian-American Event.
1. A Site To Remember: Pick a location with authentic Italian accents. From all the glitz and glam of a magnificent catering hall to upscale eateries with a uniquely “understated” Tuscan theme…stay true to your Italian-American roots.
2. Make It A Family-Style Affair: If there’s one thing Italians pride themselves on is their love of food and the incredibly decadent and delicious dishes they serve up as a sign of love. Think family-sized portions of some Italian classics including pasta and meatballs, fried calamari, sautéed rapini, etc. You’ll also want to seat guests family style…think long picnic-like tables that allow everyone to interact.
3. Make Sandwiches A Main Part Of The Main Event: Instead of traditional appetizers think mini subs filled with various Italian meats and cheeses. Have your wait staff hand them out during your cocktail hour or to guests on the dance floor as a midnight snack.
4. Authentic Appetizers: Instead of tried and true tidbits…think quintessentially NY noshes including pizza bites, mini rice balls, bite-sized calzones, antipasto platters etc.
5. Sweet Sendoffs: From desserts to palatably pleasing parting gifts think don’t forget the zeppoles, hand-crafted cannolis, and Italian cookies just to name a few. Even better have Nona bake the cookies…at least the ones you hand out as parting gifts.
